The trick with pedals like that is to flutter your pressure on it, straight pushing will cause you to stall out pretty often until you get the hang of it, if you flutter the pedal you have more control.
Anyway, after I learned how to drive stick and thought I got pretty good at it my father one day took me up to the yard. He pulled one of the Brockway's out of the garage and said "Your pretty good now, but I know how to get you perfect." Well, for those of you who don't know what a Brockway is it was basically the bigger better brother to Mack trucks back in the 30's- early 70's. Back in the 60's in order to get the 18 or 20 gears those trucks needed they used duel back to back transmissions. That means, instead of having one shift lever, you have two seperate levers you have to work sometimes at the same time. Now with a 30 ton load, air brakes, and a jake break that can get pretty hairy sometimes. Well, after an hour or so I kinda got the hang of that, but i'm still no where near my father or my uncles who have been driving those trucks since their father bought them new in 64' and 69'. If you can drive a "5-and-a-4" like that tractor, anything after that is no problem.
The Brock I perfected my skills on:
