I first tried it on an old K5 Blazer before I had my permit, and I didn't get to try it out much. I then taught myself on a few of my friends cars, and eventually got it down good on my Uncle's '69 Chevelle SS396. That was a little tough for a few reasons.

I can drive tractor, and I've driven one with that type of gearbox, it had like "A-D", and "1-5". Not too tough since you don't do much shifting in tractors, and you don't have to use the clutch to shift.
