As a sniper in Airsoft, the Standard velocity is about 500-550 fps, with many shooting 600. (The standard for Airsoft assault rifles is 300, with most vetran players ugrading to 400) However, we counter that with a 100-120 foot minimun engagement range. This means that Snipers normally carry a backup weapon for close up stuff, like a small submachinegun. I think the same thing could be used in paintball, (the minimum engagment distance rule) except that, as it's been mentioned, paintballs tend to break esier and become less accurate as velocity increases, the optimal speed being subject to the barrel...
