Your dad was thinking about Nitrous which can be found in cars, like in the movie The Fast And The Furious, they use NOS (nitrous oxide system), helps burn fuel faster = more horsepower.
That stuff is highly flammable. This is because it is a combination between nitrogen and oxygen which is just like normal air, but with nitrous, the concentration of oxygen is greater which makes it more flammable.
