increases airflow to the front of the bolt. basically the bigger the hole is, the less chance the air has to escape the space between the o-rings. this also causes a slight velocity boost. there are some other bolts that have this area almost completely open, i'll try to find a pic for you.

edit: here's a pic of that bolt. the kind of "gap" you see is the whole area between the two o-rings you have on a normal bolt, and all of that area allows much higher gas-flow
