It's used in farming, mostly with livestock. The military apparently used to use it as well. It is a common preservative and food additive.You might be better off asking for it by it's common name. There are a number of places you can try to buy it, but I don't support any of you trying a smokebomb recipe straight from the anarchist cookbook. The same components you're talking about in this thread, sugar and KNO3, are used in homemade rocket engines.
Granted, it is fairly safe, but for crying out loud it says you can do this in your home. If it lights in the pan, it will generate a huge amout of smoke. Almost 600 time it's size. Imagine your neighbors see thick white smoke pouring out of your house. There'll probably be fire departments and cops and so on, and you trying to explain your way out of this mess.
I know damn well that you're going to try it anyway. I used to do stuff like this and worse not even a few years ago. At least try to be safe. Do it outside over a small sterno burner or camp stove. Wear gloves and a face mask. You know, stuff like that.
