Before you cut the springs, BE has a small silver metal spacer that should be installed on the spring setup. You can take this out when the springs are new. This should lower the velocity some. When the springs get older and used you can put the spacer back in again.
Definatly get a chrono, they should be between $40-$80 depending on the model. Make sure you follow all the safety rules that the field do, they are there for a reason. You can go on-line and download the rules from most paintball field sites. When we play outlaw, no-one takes their mask off until we are all together looking at eachother and all plugs are in place for instance. We chrono our guns at 280 or less to make up for temperature changes and spikes and when we play pistols we go down to 240-260 because of the closer ranges.
If it's just you and your girlfriend you could have gotten a lot of mileage from Talons but in order to use them efficiently you should be more experienced (how ironic they are sold as begineers guns).
