1) Equipment is comparably priced (for quality airsoft, not walmart crap), but airsoft rounds are much cheaper than paint.
2) As far as difficulty that depends on you, your opponents, and the type of game. If you just mean playing in general then yes. Airsoft is not as popular as paintball in most places, so its harder to get a game together, although some pb fields allow airsoft on alternative days.
3) They both hurt about the same imo, but either way you will get used to it pretty quickly.
4) I greatly prefer paintball over airsoft, but if you are more into military simulation airsoft is better as far as equipment goes. There are quite a few great military scenario events set up for paintball all over the place however, and milsim games are becoming more popular. To each his own. Hope this helps a little.
