I started with an 98 Custom about a year and ahalf ago. Love the gun,still use it, and lone it to my friends who don't have their own guns yet. Good thing about it I can play in the rain and not worry about any electronics shorting out and cleaning/repairs are a sinch
The one thing that sucks about the stock 98c is the barrel. You should buy a new one and burn the stock one cause it will send paint every were but were you want it.
As for upgrade get a new barrel first off and then get an Response trigger if you want to get out of the 8 balls per second range
