What?
Potassium Nitrate is one of the most COMMON fertilizers. Its added to all those "miracle grow" type fertilizers found at walmart for example.
When used as fertilizer, its called "Nitrate of Potash", and is excellent for acidic soil types. Ammonium Nitrate is also used, as is Sodium Nitrate and other nitrates.
Chemically, it is very easy to exchange the different types of nitrates, since they are all compound materials.
Also, just to correct:
The Germans were NOT the first to use chemical weapons during WWI. THE French DID! Both had actually signed a treaty in 1899 to never use chemical weapons, but when France broke the treaty, Germany figured they had to retalliate. Its a common misconception that Germany used them first.
Plus, they had been used in small amounts in the late 1800's. Thats why they had the Hague treaty of 1899 that every signed EXCEPT the USA! They never signed it actually signed it. (Same with the Geneva concention. They "agreed" to it, but never signed it).
