His mask was knocked so the was a gap between the side of his head and the seal on the mask. The paintball came in form behind. It was mostly becasue his mask wasn't on properly and partically due to the cold weather at the time and the proximity of the shooter.

The maks are designed to shop paintball hitting you in the eye, which they do very well.
