The maks are designed to shop paintball hitting you in the eye, which they do very well.

I don't think it happened either. What mostl ikely happened was the ball hit the side of the back and the majority of the paint went inside his goggles. The reason he thought it broke agianst the inside of his lens or whatever was because when the paint hit it (And some shell bits), it made a whap sound like when a paintball hits your mask.
