the ram operates the hammer, which operates the bolt and the opening of the valve, every time you pull the trigger the ram pushes forward the hammer, this takes the bolt with it, the hammer strikes open the valve and puts the bolt over the valve and a paintball is fired in some direction.
the bolt pin slots in too the hammer but there is no perfect fit, the position of the bolt pin on the hammer influences the distance of the bolt in the breech (when fired), you have to align the ram which also adjusts the hammer so every time you fire, the bolt is in the correct position at the end of the cycle.
if not it could cause the bolt to hit paintballs when firing resulting in chop chop and some unecessary wear on the inside
if the bolt pin is against the rear part of the hammer you should hear a slight click when closing the breech, just a slight resistance then it is set perfect.
usually it stays there for some while but you can also use locktite (blue) to keep the ram in place.
