I think you are talking about the mine poles (I forget what they called them) that were just large telephone poles, not unlike Rommel's Asparagus, with mines on the top. The point of that was so that during high tide, the poles could hold mines underwater so they couldnt be detected, but close enough to the surface that anything going over with a certain keel depth would hit the mine and blow up. Most LCTs that were sunk were either from the mines or mortar fire, or from artillary positions.
