i found this in my hose line

Hey i got a stock minimag and i was re-positioning the macrolines. took off one macroline that connects around where the quick connect is. i found this twist in little metal mesh thing that looks lik ea sponge. what is that thing? do i need it if im using compressed air? will i have a better air flow or is it a essential filter for the incoming air. i can post a pic if neede but that would involve taking apart my gun again.
