Scuba Fill stations - Tell me about em
I just got a Crossfire 68/45 and its real nice, big gauge, really light. so the next morning (today) after class i drove to the local scuba shop and he filled it (he can only fill a little over 4000psi) for $3, which is a little cheaper than co2 i used to get. i told him i had a scuba tank at home, and he said fill stations are the way to go if you have a scuba tank. itd be a lot cheaper to use one. i'm interested in getting one now, i see they're only around $50, they all look the same(like little clamps).
Any recommendations on which brand, or all they all pretty much the same like they look. Do they come with hoses? It doesnt look like the tank fits directly on there.
Thank you

hes not talking about compressing the air himself..if he has a scuba tank and has it filled by his scuba shop or wherever then the fill station is all he needs

no you don't need a hose. the clamp lookin thing that goes on the scubs has a quick release that connects to the fill nipple on the tank, no hose needed.

The only thing you will need is a fill station. You can get them with or without guages. Although you don't really need a guage since you have one on your tank.
The fill station clamps onto the top of the SCUBA tank. No hoses or other devices needed. And yes the fill nipple is the small metal thing sticking out the side of the regulator on the tank.

just to let you know most scuba tanks (if they were used for scuba diving at one point) would already have a reg of some kind on it and would only be a 3000psi reg (becuase it would be a waste to have a 4500 reg when not needed)

I thought to fill 4500 you needed to have a couple of tanks and cascade them, could be misinformed though.

does anyone know of a site where I can get information about filling small tanks? I'm considering buying a small bulk (scuba) tank like a 5 lb., but I don't know how to fill tanks. Any information would be helpful
thanks
(I should know this- I wrote the sticky in this forum)

Oh boy.
For a fill station ebay. They are all basically the same except for design. I have two but one needed a grinding job on the frame to fit one of my tanks.
Scuba Tanks go large as you can. Check the hydro date before you buy because it could add as much as $60.00 or more to the price for a hydro test.
Watch buying used tanks from someone other than a dive shop, some older than 1988, if I recall right, might not be filled by some dive shops. Also some scuba tanks have been reacalled and cannot be refilled period. If you find a used tank call your local dive shop with all the info and ask them about it before buying.
Check the dive shop to see if they will refill your scuba tank for you without you having dive certification. It is a regulation and there are insurance issues for them if they get nailed.
They have 4500 psi scuba tanks but they are much more expensive and few use them for PB.
You can get many refills and if you are using lp you can use most all of the air from a scuba just the fills get real small but are good when just making adjustments or short test shots.
You get 3-5 good refills over 2000psi from a 80ci scuba tank and a lot (10-15) down to about 1000psi.
Some paintball fields say they will refill a scuba tank but you have to provide the proper connection to do it. Weather or not it is against regulations I couldn't tell you.
Be careful with the spring loaded collar of a fill station, support your marker well and make sure the collar locks into place. Other wise some of the smallest bearings you will never see go flying out as the collar, retainer and oring are blown off and a new collar can be about $12.00 some places.
Check the o-ring on the scuba tank regularly and replace as needed.
Always make sure your fillstation fits as it should both on o-ring side and the dempled back of the scuba tank. Never attempt to use if it is on at an angle.
You may get a fill of 3000psi on the gauge of the dive shop but see more or less once it is in a different atmosphere but good dive shops take this into consideration and stay on the safe side.
3000psi Scuba tanks are hydrotested to 4500psi but the bust disks are about 3300 or so and older ones can be weak an burst at lower pressures.
Just because a scuba tank looks good on the outside it could have micro fratures (generally in the neck) which will make it fail a hydro test.
Locally for me the dive shops send tanks out for hydro testing and it is only the hydro test. If the regulator is bad then its going to cost you for the reg on top of the hydro.
Burst disks on a scuba tank run in the $9.00 range.
Cascading doesn't work with compressed air. It equals out between the two tanks.
Lastly. Women jump and run if a burts disk on a 80ci scuba tank goes and it is a real hoot.
