What in the world is a "burst disk"?

I see these "burst disks" for sale in "5K" and "7.5K". What service does this product provide? I'm dying to know...

when a tank overpressurizes this blows off allowing the tank to depressurize so it doesn't rupture.

Yeah, it vents all the air out of your tank if something happens.

Worth mentioning that they will need replaced once they pop. If one is stamped 3k, that means that it will break at 3,000psi and empty the tank it is installed on.

Once its done its job and the tank is safe and empty you can just wrench it off and put a new one on. The new one needs rated the same as the old one.

I don't know if it's obvious from what they've described, but no, it's not an upgrade or anything. All tanks come with burst disks.

on your tank, yousee how there is a small screw with 2 holes on the side of it? its hollow on the inside, but has a disk blocking the air from escaping. when the air pressure is too high, it will blow the disk. which is a saftey measure so the tank doesn't blow up on you, literally, and send metal flying everywhere.

Does the number determine its rating?

The 2 I have are as follows (these are co2 tanks)

Pure Energy: 20 oz. The screw (burst disk) is screwed in all way, with "3K" on it.

Catalina Cylinders: 20oz. Burst disk is not screwed in all the way (some thread showing) with "1800 WP" engraved on it.

ok i over looked that.. but I always thought the co2 tanks were 3k psi anyway, but i guess its not measured in psi.. are they not under that much pressure then? if the other one is only 1800?

HPA tanks range from 3000psi to 5000psi, I'm not sure what co2 tanks are but they're a lot lower since the co2 is in liquid form inside the bottle.

Burst discs are supposed to be rated to the test pressure of the tank. CO2 = 3000psi, HPA = 5k, or 7.5k.

Some Co2 tanks will come with a 1.8k burst disc instead of a 3k for added safety, since they will rupture at a lower pressure. the downside is that it is very possible you may go through 2-3 times as many burst discs.

Some HPA tanks use those same 1.8k discs on the output of the tank regulator incase something malfunction in the regulator and the pressure starts rising.

NEVER use a burst disc with a rating higher than the TEST pressure of the tank. (this means that YES, you can put a 3k on your co2 tank if it only had a 1.8k)
