Bulk CO2 Tank Question

Hi,

I want to fill my own CO2 tanks (a dozen of us heading off to the woods for long weekend of hunting each other). I've got a 32 Degrees "deluxe" fill station and a hanging digital scale. No problems there.

I went to the local welding shop and rented a 20 pound tank of CO2 to practice on. Specifically requested a siphon/dip tube so that should be OK.

The bulk tank has a CGA320 valve on it. Little handwheel to open and close the valve. The valve attachment itself (the bit that you screw the fill station to) looks like a threaded brass cylinder with a small hole down the center (running into the tank, it's where the CO2 flows).

The fill station has a "carbonic nut" - just a big honkin' brass nut that tightens onto the bulk tank valve.

Problem is that no gas is flowing from the bulk tank. Main tank valve is on, but I'm not getting anything.

The fill station and the bulk tank valve both end with flat surfaces that press against each other (there's a white plastic o-ring inside the carbonic nut). Do I need to request some kind of special fitting for the bulk tank, or is there only one type of CGA320 fitting and it's standard around the world?

Anything else I might be doing wrong? The directions for the fill station are totally simple. Difference between "Open" and "Closed" on the bulk tank handwheel is about 1/8 turn.

Thanks for any help!

seems like maybe your bulk tank has a bad valve. every tank i have ever used took atleast 2-3 full turns to open. but there may be some new and improved valve that my supplier doesnt use. take the fill station off and see if you get any CO2 coming out of the tank. if you dont thats the problem. if you do get a nice white mist then its something with your fill station.

Thanks Paintbug, that's pretty much what I'm thinking at this point. I did some digging around online last night and the CGA320 flat nipple fitting is totally standard (found diagrams of the standard valves) so I'm confident that I'm not missing some part.

1/8 turn for on/off on the bulk tank just seemed a little funny - it may be that since it's newly filled the valve is a little "sticky" or tight and just needs a good hard twist, but I'm calling the supply place when they open to double-check. Hopefully they'll say "Oh yeah, it should go around a couple of times, just give it a good twist".

If you hear a loud "BANG" then I did something wrong :-)

All of the 25lbers I've used required several complete rotations of the main tank valve in order to flow.

Just got off the phone with the welding company, they said if it's the first time I've opened the tank that's completely normal, it should take 2-3 full turns to open it all the way.

Thanks guys!
