Ok, I never really liked having a scope on my gun. Aside from being a little long, I practically never have the need for 3x magnification, which is the lowest power setting I've got on mine. Red dot scopes are much shorter and less obtrusive, and since they're all 1x (at least all that I've seen, 1.5 or 2x might be nice) it seems like they'd be easier to practically use. The only difference I see in some of them is that they're listed as 30mm or 35mm or 45mm. What exactly does that mean? Does it make any difference?

Size of the dot? Not sure.. That's just a guess.

Do not get a red dot with magnification. 1x will allow you to keep both eyes open while aiming. once you get magnification you will have to close one eye to aim and you dont want that. The 42mm and 30mm is the diameter of the scope. A 30mm is a little larger than a Quarter and a 42mm is abou the size of a cardboard paper towel roll. The one on my gun is a 42mm and i highly recommend it over the 30mm.
