weird cocking rod situation...

well i went to play yesterday with my 05 prostock and towards the end of the day my cocking rod started falling out. no biggie, its known to happen. but then at one point, my cocking rod just fly out of the hammer for apparently no reason. at first i was thinking the hammer threads were stripped, the cocking rod threads look fine. so i screwed it back in and tugged on it, and it didnt move. i checked to see if it was lose. nope, still in tight. so then i fire twice and the rod flys out again

any idea what would cause this to happen? i put teflon tape on it and its holding for now, but it just scares me thinking one day it will fall out and never be able to go back in

It sounds as if it is loose. But coming out after only 2 shots is what’s getting me. That would have to make it REALLY lose. Is it an aftermarket cocking rod?

In any case, if the Teflon tape is holding it, it should stay. I have seen many cases where cocking rods fall out, and almost all of them are resolved by a little Teflon tape or loc-tite.

no it is the stock cocking rod and stock hammer, thats the weird thing. the teflon is holding it though so i guess its ok, but i cant think of any other way for that to happen other than having the threads stripped, or WGP just did a really crappy job of tapping threads in the hammer and made the hole too big, or made the cocking rod too small.

Yeah that is really weird. Considering most people have trouble removing it, and your having touble getting it to stay in, pretty ironic. But, if the Teflon works, don't fix somthing that aint broke.

how many revolutions are you getting before its in tight? on my eblade, it was common for the cocking rod to work itself free. I would tighten hand tight, then give 1/8 turn with a tool. that seemed to snug it up just enough.
you should be getting at least 4 full revolutions on the cocking rod though. Also you should be able to tell if the threads don't match or are sloppy. Does it feel loose/sloppy when you are tightening it?

it goes in somewhat loose the first 2 turns, then starts to get a little snug, and as i keep turning to tighten it down (hand tight mind you) it then just gets loose again, and then starts to tighten up, then repeat. i guess the threads are starting to strip

edit: i was guessing. but now i counted and i got about 6 and 3/4 turns when it started getting tight, then it "skipped" again and went loose....

If it "skipped" like you said, then my guess is the threads are almost hosed, if they are not already.

Plyers always helped me when my 2k3 did that. Like sometimes it went in crooked, and sometimes i THOUGHT i put it in the whole way, and it ended up hitting me in the face and cracked my lense in the lower corner .

well i am going to have to buy a new hammer anyways, i already had it on my list of things to buy, but now that i need it like... NOW it suxorz cuz i have no money, i spent it all paintballing this weekend

and now teflon tape is starting to fail me. its hard to get more than 1-2 wraps around the threads because if you get too much it will get stuck in the IVG, but with only 1 wrap around it still comes loose. the weird thing is though, i didnt take the rod in and out alot, i was always careful that i didnt cross-thread, and i never tightened it down with a tool, only by hand. and on sunday when i was playing, towards the end of the day, it just plopped out and i started having these problems. i guess its possible the cockin rod was unscrewing itself and then on the last 1-2 threads it just got yanked out and destroyed the first few threads in the hammer... then repeat a few times and you have no threads left but i really dont know, thats just an idea...

If I had to guess thats what I would say happened. When you tighten and it gets loose again, that is a sign of stripped threads. There is really not alot that you can do.
Other than retapping it, but that would enlarge the hole. You could helicoil it but that would cost almost as much as a new hammer. To get you threw a day of play, you could try locktite on it. If you are able to get it to the snug point, it may hold. Just don't take it out again, and adjust your velocity by the main reg.
