cocker leaks
Ok my friend brought over his cocker today and when we aired it up it leaked from the barrel. What is causing this? How can it be fixed?

Cup seal is getting a bad seal or is faulty.
Could be other things, but thats what i'd put my money on.

Take the reg. off and put a couple drops of oil in it, and then dryfire the marker a couple times if you can. If not just put the oil in and run some air through it.
If its defective, you will need to buy a new one. This is pretty easy if your familure with the removal of the front block. Just replace it with the new one.
If your not very good at dissasembly, try and find someone who is, or at last resort take it into a shop. Shouldent be very expensive, as it is a common problem. Is he running HPA/Nitro or co2?

Cup seals don't go bad too often, it's more than likely a piece of dirt or teflon tape caught in it.
It could also be a failure in the valve o-ring, but check the cup seal first.

has anyone asked if they tried to cock the gun before we tell him to disassemble it?
#1 reason cockers leak down the barrel when first aired up = gun not cocked and the hammer is sitting on the cupseal holding it open.
next question to ask,
How fast is the leak?
will the gun fire?
if it can fire, does the leak change after a few shots?
Yes = cup seal failing to seal correctly. Solution could be to clean it or replace it.
No = orings. Oil could help but if its leaking now, oil would have helped before they went bad. (this could also indicate a failed cupseal)
and the most important question to ask...
What has changed since it worked correctly?
Seriously guys. stabbing in the dark works some times, but asking question to help reduce the amount of things that could cause a problem is the way to solve issues.

its a very fast leak coming out of the barrel. he hasn't done anything to the gun. so he has to cock it before he airs it up?? it won't shoot at all.

make sure the marker is cocked before airing it up. See if that changes anything then get back to us.
also how long has the marker been sitting unused?

I had the same problem. I just sent it back and they fixed it for free. And it was the o-rings inside that was the problem.

that is a definate possibility. for example the marker has sat for several months without air, the orings around the valve can become brittle and crack. all the oil in the world won't fix that. a little dab before storing it would have save them though.
changing those orings also requires a valve tool. which is either a trip to the shop or as you did, mail the marker to be fixed. Since cocking the gun is free and would cause the same issue, I would like to rule it out before I tell someone to pay even for shipping.

I was assuming that an ex-cocker owner would realize that the gun leaks if not cocked before airing up.

well my cocker had an on/off so i would just screw in the tank, cock the gun, and then turn on the on/off. i never new it had to be cocked before aired up, but i guess in my case i sorta skipped that step. my friend can't get his tank filled until saturday, so i will help him out then
