I set my velocity to 280, and i have a dye barrel on my gun and it doesnt shoot that far, what should i do?

Really the only thing you could do is get a better paint to barrel match. Try and find paint that is close to the same bore as your barrel. This link should help some http://www.ottersccustoms.com/paintc.html

you have to remember its really important on a cocker to have good paint to barrel match because if not the paintball will roll right out of your barrel when you tilt it down...this could be causing the ball to be halfway down the barrel when the air hits it causing it to not fly very far...take your barrel off and see if your paint rolls right through, and if so get bigger paint or a smaller barrel

The paint matching the barrel seems right to me, but could it be the ball detent isnt screwed in tight enough?

No, ball detent on cockers only keeps the gun from double feeding. Once the bolt comes forward, the ball is pushed past the detent.
