Buying an autococker

My buddy has an older autococker wgp with a few upgrades. My problem is timing the damn thing. is it a hassle to time it. my friend has played with it but he says it goes off timing sometimes when he plays. I wanna learn how to time it right so i wont have that problem on the field. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
