An autococker is basically a pump gun that cocks itself (hence auto-cocker)
When you fire the trigger, the threeway releases pressure into your marker causing it to actuate and make the backblock cock back with the bold and cocking rod. It isnt really better or worse than a normal gun (a high end gun if thats what you mean by normal) It can be as good as you want it to be, as it is the MOST customizable gun on the market. Thats why people love them so much, because you can make it your own. It has a closed bolt design in which the bolt pushes the ball into the barrel and is actually resting against the ball until you fire and the bolt kicks back and pushes another ball in the barrel. This type of operation offers less kick on the marker....increasing accuracy. Also, there is no blowback with this type of marker as tippmans and spyders have...resulting in a more efficient, smoother firing gun with less chops. The main thing you have to remember is that you MUST pull the trigger all the way back and release it all the way foreward. If you dont, you will chop a ball in the chamber. This is called short stroking.

As far as matenance goes....if you dont know what it is you are touching, DONT TOUCH IT!!! If you make adjustments to things you dont know how to fix, you will most likely put your gun out of time, and it will not function properly and you will have to spend 15$ at a shop for them to fix.

If you do chop a ball, all you have to do to clean it is take out the bolt pin, remove the bolt, and you are looking directly through the top chamber out of the barrel. You just stick in a pull through squeegee and the chamber is clean.

Depending on the brand (WGP for me...get a WGP!!!) It is pretty much ready to go out of the box.

t is an excellent marker to own, but I would do your homework first. It is alot more work than a spyder or tippman, but by no means hard to learn.

Oh P.S. you NEED nitrogen or antisiphoned C02 to run an auto cocker. Plain C02 will mess it up big time.

yea, there's a thread on this exact same topic below. use the search button, it saves lives.
also: Short stroking is NOT chopping a ball in the chamber, it's when you pull the trigger in a way so that the back block does not pull the cocking rod back all the way so it does not seat on the sear, leaving you with a ball in the barrel but an un-cocked cocking rod.

^ yeah. so there for you pull the trigger again, allowing another ball, and cocking the gun. Pull again = 3 balls fire out of your barrel. If they break have fun cleaning!

How an autococker works
BY: Mohammed S. Alo
July 1995

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The autococker fires from a closed bolt. It is probably the only gun that fires closed bolt. The auto-cocker system only activates during the last half of the trigger pull. The final portion activates a three way valve that allows CO2 to enter the front side of the activating cylinder. This in turn pushes the cocking block backward approximately 1" and moves the bolt and cocking rod backwards. At this time the hammer latches and a paintball drops into the breech. The bolt and cocking assembly remains in the rearward position until you release the trigger. Releasing the trigger reverses the three-way valve. This vents the CO2 from the front of the activating cylinder and routes CO2 to the rear of the activating cylinder. The cylinder then pulls the cocking block and bolt into the forward position. The gun is now ready to fire. The first half of the next trigger pull releases the hammer, firing the gun, and the second half of the pull repeats the above steps.

Or in other words...
The basic idea behind the AutoCocker is to take a pump gun and replace the pump handle with a piston to pump the gun automatically. Hence the ram. The ram is controlled by a 3-way valve that is connected to the trigger. The ram, 3-way, and regulator are located under a cover or exposed (most are exposed) on the front of the gun. The cocking block connecting rod run down the left side of the body. It connects the ram to the cocking block. When the trigger is depressed, the 3-way sends Co2 to the back of the ram's piston and it in turn pushes the cocking block back. When this happens, the block pulls the bolt and cocking rod back as well. The bolt is now open which allows a paintball to fall into the chamber. The cocking rod is connected to the hammer, so the hammer is also pulled back until the sear catches on the trigger. When the trigger is released, the 3-way routes Co2 into the front of the piston, pulling the cocking block forward, closing the bolt. The paintgun is now ready to fire. Depressing the trigger again fires the paintball and begins the cycle again.
So the autococker will not fire a paintball on the first trigger pull, but rather has to cycle a paintball into the chamber first.
