Buick Help

My dad and I decided to buy a broken car and fix it. Funny thing is that he doesn't know how to fix anything. Now we think it's an electrical problem because we moved the wires around a bit and jump started the battery so now when he try to start it we can see it clicking under the hood like the 2 things move like 1/4 and then stop. We think we should buy a new ignition and put it in with fresh wires. Whatcha think it is?

Btw, it's an 84'.

i think you don't know much about cars, or don't know how to explain them very well

what wires did you "move around?"
what is "it" when you say "it clicking under the hood?"
what are the "2 things," and how do they "move 1/4 then stop?"
what part of the ignition are you going to buy?

gotta start with the basics..

does the engine turn over and not start, or does it not turn over at all?

if it turns over and doesnt start:
does the car have fuel, and does it get to the engine?
does the engine hold compression?
do the spark plugs get spark?
those things (fuel, compression, spark, and air) are the only things an engine needs to run, you can't be missing a single one.

if it doesn't turn over at all
check the battery. if it's dead or really weak, either buy a new one or put one from another car (with similar size and cranking amps) in it
check the starter and/or starter solenoid
check the ignition cylinder (the part your keys go into) and corresponding wires

those are about all the things i can think of after working for 12 hours, so try that stuff and get back to us with a better description of what the car is doing

We were thinking of buying an ignition cylinder but I don't think that'll help. The car has gas, and the engine turns but I don't think there's a spark. The engine only turns about 1/4 then stops untill we try to start it again. It makes a clicking sound.

try the starter or starter solenoid. I belive you can take the starter to autozone or kragen or the like and get it tested. that or go old-school; get some jumper cables, attatch them to the starter terminals, then connect the cables to a battery
