Better gas efficency?
I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee. 4 Wheel Drive, V6, 4.0 Liter... its a gas hog but a beast.
I'm wondering how I can make it more efficent. Mind you this is a 100 dollar car that is in very nice shape now, so I don't really mind dumping a little money into it.
I won't be seriously driving it until may next year, so I have a while to get it to my needs. I'm hopefully planning on fixing this car up really nice and somehow convinving my parents *cough* MOM *cough* to let me get like a Kawasaki 250 EX or 500 EX or something to start out on.
But what are some ways to get the gass efficency up? I think I'm getting like 12mpg city.

-Change the Air filter (K&N)
-Spark Plugs. Getting a weak spark will affect performace. These are usually a quick fix and should be done anyhow.
-Fuel filter (Many people neglect to get this replaced, and it can seriously rob mileage)
-Bad O2 sensor. (Running a bad one will give you false fuel/air mixture readings and give you horrible mileage) Signs of this include a rotten egg smell after idle, and a check engine light.
-Fuel Injectors. If your injectors are clogged and sticking, you could be losing mileage. See if you can pick up a new stock set.
And then theres always the things you do while driving that affect mileage:
*Dont drive aggressively, that eats up mileage
*Dont brake hard
*Make sure your tires are filled to the right psi
*If you have stuff piled in your car, take it out. Extra weight makes the car worse on gas.
After these fixes, you should definately see an improvement. Best thing is, all of this stuff can be done at home (maybe not the o2 sensor, dont know how easilly accessable it is to you.) and its relatively cheap.

I have all new spark plugs and wires.
Might get a K&N.
I was considering one of those chips that gives you extra fuel:air ratio and boosts HP and gives you a little better mpg.
Pretty sure my fuel injectors are good. I need a new gas tank and I can get one for free but fuel injectors are like 108 bucks at a junkyard.

Yeah check that fuel filter too, its like 12 dollars at Autozone, you can do that yourself (most likely depending on the location), and you'll be thanking me later.

on a jeep especially, make sure the tires are correctly inflated and the air filter is clean... i fixed those two on mine, and it made a helluva difference.. along with new spark plugs... and seriously, you think it hogs gas now... start driving aggressively with it, trust me it's so bad you wouldnt believe...i drove about 15 miles from a nearby city to my house, and driving it like a mad man, speeding, and doing burnouts, taking off fast, and just flooring it all the time, i went through a little less than a 1/4 tank... mind you i only have the 4 banger... with the 6 i'd think it'd be worse....

You could always get one of these too and "Supercharge" your car.

Seems like a mod worthy of Fire's Tercel.

i've gotten 30 miles on just under a 1/4 tank. ~6.6 mpg... I <3 my v8, but I hate it's gas milage combined with my aggressive driving habits. I guess it's up from 4.5mpg before I ran injector cleaner through it.

Some cars can take up to 3 of them, others can only take 1 or 2. Adds about 35 horsepower.

Doubt it...
Heres what it is:
They SAY that it has shown 35hp improvements in RARE CASES. These are probably cars that have the most restrictive intake system in the world, and after they free up that air, it makes all the difference. Well, a normal, well tuned car thats already getting good airflow will probably not benefit this much. Yes, maybe 2-5hp but nothing more. Definately not "turbocharged".

you can buy a cold air intake, or you can also mill out your intake manifold or throttle body. spark plugs and wires will help as well. Make sure your catalytic converter is working properly as well. Another sheap fix is to clean your injectors out by the gas additive type. there are many easy things you can do, it just depends how much time you have to put into it. Drive it like a civilized human being as much as possible, until you want to show up some ricer lol.
