Ok, well recently I feel into the situation where I NEED to get some form of transportation within the near future. On top of that I'm looking for cheap stuff, so naturally street bikes came to mind. So anyone who knows quite a bit about street bikes/california laws, can you please give your opinion or answer these questions.

Kawasaki Ninja 250r, good choice? Any other reccomendations to look at?
I've never ridden a bike before, only preperation I will have some training on a dirtbike from my friend, and a decent amount of time on the road in a car.

New or Used?
The 250r is 3k brand new, I was taking a look at some used ones. I saw quite a few around 2k3 with about 1k miles in good condition in the 2,200 area. I have been told that I can find older models(mid late 90's) for more like 1000$.

Insurance about 300 bucks a year? I grabbed a quick quote from progressive tonight and got quote at 307$ for basic coverage. Anything I forgot about that will raise/lower the free(besides good student discount, im not currently a student).

Any reccomendations on gear?
From what my friend has told me, I will want to shell out about 200 bucks for a decent helmet, I will also want a nice pair of gloves. Everything else just needs to be basic protection based on what I see fit.

Current California law says that since I am over 17 1/2 that I can get my learner's permit without any drivers ed classes or training. But I do not know if this also applies to getting my M1 permit. Anyone know?
