Trucks...
Well, I went offroadin the other day and I'm hooked. I wanna get a real nice truck, but I'm not gonna go offroadin all the time with it so it can be nice. Ya know?
What do you guys think, I really want a Cummins Diesel, so I guess its dodge for me, but if I can find other stuff I might have to settle. I won't be getting it till the spring/summer(prices will drop). What you guys think, I'll probably have around 15k to spend, since the parents said they'll help with graduation present and I'll be workin my ass off. I just wanna hear what you guys got to say and any advice. I know what to look for, and I'm not buyin any truck that ever had a plow on it, or anything htat isn't a 4x4.
Discuss.

^truth.
Are you lookin like later 90's dodge, or the newer style?
You could get a late 90's and spend the excess $$ on stuff like liftkit, wheels n tires and the likes.
A friend of mine has an '05 dodge with looooots of stuf on/in it. Prob 20 grand in parts. Ill get a pic.

Get a jeep and like pimp it out. you have an offroad beast, and a on-road sweet ride.

Definately not gettin a wrangler. They tip like its their job off road, especially if its lifted.

Comrade's advice:
Get a full size pickup if you want to offroad. They will carry the most stuff and be the most spacious. Plus their drivetrain will be a little beefier.
Stay away from GMC/Chevrolets: They use IFS which will give you a little nicer ride, but will not hold up in my experience to the ravages of offroading. Plus other trucks like the Dodge ram can use bigger tires stock than the GMs.
Stay away from 1/2 tons. 1/2 tons aren't really meant for offroading and their engine drivetrain combos will prove it. If you ever want to have tires that are bigger than 35inches (actually, a friend of mine had 37's on his, but then again, he sold it and the rearend ended up blowing up in the new owners driveway...) without having to buy a new truck then get at least a 3/4 ton. 3/4 tons usually have bigger engines, beefier transmissions and beefier axles which would be better suited for offroaders.
Comrade's recommendation
Since you said you wanted a cummins diesel, I'll recommend a 94-2000 Dodge Ram Sport 3/4 ton.

My father was an off-roader for 30 years. If you really want something excellent look for a late 60's early 70's Blazer/Jimmy with the 350ci, 4 speed (first gear crawl), and heavy axels. If it isn't already lifted it is easy to lift with a kit because of its solid axels. If anything breaks parts are easy to find, and anyone and their brother can rebuild a 350. The only thing you have to watch out for is rust, both on frame and body.
By the way, when I was first looking at cars and trucks I asked my father if I could get a jeep wrangler. He said absolutely not, he helped way too many people flip them back over after they rolled, and a few times the people didn't fare too well.

I have a 94 z71, and I had a 1981 Jeep CJ7 with a amc 360 for 2 years, and my brother and I shared a 74 red jeep cj5 also had a 360. Comrade is right about the IFS on them, but that really only applies in stock form, there's a place in CA called Kartek offroad that specializes in beefing up IFS, they've taken alot of things from SCORE racing trophy trucks, my z71 actually came with a 9.5" SF light duty 3/4 ton 14 bolt rear end, which is about 50-100% stronger that the wimpy tooth pick 10 bolt axle you seen under so many lifted chevy's that rarely see more than a dirty puddle of water, and here's a link to my off-road gallery just to see a stock z71 in the mud, and my jeeps messing around. I rarely take cameras when I go off-road, I don't like having to stop and "setup" pictures. http://offroadworld.tenmagazines.com...ry.ten?id=4187

dodge is the way to go
i wouldnt get just a regular lift kit either. they raise your center of gravity, making it easier to tip and harder to handle. get some NICE suspension. try kore theyre stuff is sick. it will raise you maybe 2 or 3 inches but is sweet riding. also go for a 3/4 ton like previously mentioned, theyre more heavy duty (bad grammer). my dad has an 05 3/4 ton. its nice! go for dodge. im gettin a late 90s dodge 1/2 ton soon. i hope.

Speaking of rear axles, like maggot said, look for the 14 bolt. Pretrty much known to be one of the best sub mog axles in production. If you're really crazy though, like my brother in law, he's swapping 4.5 ton MOG portal axles into his truck.

yea diesels are sooo heavy but i love dodge trucks. if u want to have any money left to lift it and what not then get an older truck because the newer they are, the more expensive it is to get a lift kit for it.

Go Toyota. 85 and back 4runners and pickups all had solid front axles and are great at off roading, even stock.

Before anyone does it, dont flame me for bringin up an old thread. It says that he is looking to buy near spring or summer (now) so my post is still relevant....
I'd get a 90's dodge ram. 1500 if u want to actually off road. Dodge has a solid front axle, so if you wanted to run a tire 35" or more a front solid axle is the way to go.
With 15k you could easily get a Quadcab 90's ram. I would look for something that is already lifted cuz it will save you alot of money. If you find something already lifted you could spend about $10k -12k on that then throw on a limited slip rear diff and a full time front locker since u wont be using 4wd on the road.
I duno, I could go on and on with possibilities. Offroading is my life. Hit me up on AIM if you wana talk about anyhting else.
Looks good clean and muddy. Pics of mine....
