Exclamation Stereo Wiring question

Ok, so this is more of a general electrical question. I just started working on my car again, and it killed two batteries. I mean, killed not drained, they won't take a charge anymore. THank goodnes for Wal-Marts liberal "two year free replacement" policy. Anyways, I don't think its a serious problem with my electrical system, I think its stuff I hooked up. I unhooked my tach, stereo, and fm modulator, and put in a new battery. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I had tried to hook up the stereo wiring etc.. to existing wiring from the old factory radio, and I think that caused the problem. I suck when it comes to electrical stuff. What I would like to do is just put in new wiring to power the stereo, fm modulator, and also add a 12v socket (ciggarete lighter). THe thing is, I don't know what to wire it into. I already have the hole through my firewall, I just need to know what to wire into. It's a '70 Ford Maverick, Inline 6. Also, the stereo needs two connections, one for constant power to maintain the memory, and one to power it when the car is running. Make fun of me for being a sucky car guy all you want (I am) but pleeeease help me. I will paypal $5 to the first person to give me a serious working solution. Driving without music drives me insane. I wanna get this done on my day off today. Thanks.

I have a fuse box under my dash, that is a pain to get to. I'd prefer to not have to wire everyting into there. I want a more direct route.

to Power a stereo you need 3 wires you nees constant 12v, acc turn on, and a ground

ok first pick up an inline fuse you only need a small one like 15A and you will need some 14g wiring too

run a wire from the + side of the battery to the stereo and install your fuse at the start of your wire near the battery

ok now you need an ACC turn on

now what i would do with this is find something that will get power when the key is on i am not sure on specific things for your car but i know the wipers would be one thing

and pick up a in line tap it will allow you to splice into the wire without haveing to cut it all up but be sure to install that inside the car because those connestion are not water proof

and now you need a ground (-) take a wire brush clean a spot on the floor or firewall down to bare metal then take a piece of wire with a ring terminal on it attach it to the clean spot of metal and poof you have a ground wire

and when connectiong your stereo be sure all your connections are tight and you dont have any bare spots in you wiring

here is a link showing what the tap is and you should be able to pick this up at any auto parts store

Ok, but whats the best way to connect wiring to the battery? I know about the acc turn on wire, and ground, but is there another way to wire the acc wire? I already tried splicing it into existing wiring, and I think that caused the problem, if there is no direct way I'll try it again.

the best way to get your constant 12v is to get a terminal for car audio wal-mart has one for about 7 or 8 bux and it will work with all batteries and it has 4 connections on it it has 2 large gauge and 2 small

i would try splicing into a different ACC power source i am pretty sure it would be a PITA to run a new ACC wire

and have you checked you alt and ground to make sure they are working and tight

I'm was looking at kits from painless, but I guess I could just get one of the audio hookup kits from wal-mart. Def easier, and cheaper. That way I won't have to tap into anything to get my constant. My grounds are good by the way. I think I'll head over to wally world and get some more stuff.
