Desktop Dyno 2003

Any of you guys ever use this program? If not, I HIGHLY suggest you check it out. It's relatively easy to get your hands on it
Basically what it does is it generates your HP and TQ curve for you, and allows you to enter in a ****load of parameters for your engine, such as your block, displacement, stroke, bore, compression, it has a whole library of head configurations, valve sizes, intake manifolds, cfm, forced induction, exhaust, fuel (this includes Nitrous Oxide) and cam specs down to the T. It's really impressive and pretty accurate, give or take a few HP. This program is a MUST HAVE if you ever consider upgrading your engine.

If you can get this program, go ahead and generate your curves and post them up (be honest). There's mine with aftermarket headerback, muffler, 64cc Vortec heads and roller-cam.

throw in this for grins for me
4.030x3.48
6" rod
-2cc flattop .030 over pistons
64cc vortec heads ( dont know if '03 lets you use the vortec flow numbers, it should? )
170cc intake ports
212/218@.050
.493 lift int / .501 lift exh
110 lsa
106 int c/l
performer rpm dual plane style intake
750cfm 4bbl 4150 style holley
1 3/4" headers

I used to use desk top dynos, but I found them usually under or above true figures by 10-20%.

Glad to see I'm not the only one on this late/early. I'll have your numbers up in a sec.

That should be in the ball park. I gave you a 9.5:1 compression since you didn't specify, and I am running 9.3:1 so I bumped it up a tad and 1.94/1.5 valves, since those are the size on my 64cc Vortecs as well. The cam...I came as close to as I could. I picked one out of the library of 335 available that fit that one most, but it's not quite dead on. In order for it to be perfect, I'd need your valve timing numbers from .050 and from seat to seat (IVO, IVO, EVO, EVC). But everything else is accounted for.

it's 10.25:1 CR, and you have L98 heads unless you swapped vortecs onto that motor. L31 vortec heads are 20-30HP bolt on to L98 heads. I'd have to find my cam card for the valve timing events, but its 264/270 adv duration and 212/218@.050. desktop dynos are so hit or miss.

Nope, as of now my engine is a mystery, other than the fact it is a 350 with 64cc Vortecs (centerbolt + head casting # got me that). It was swapped in in place of the stock 305, and I dont know the guy who did that, so I have no clue as to the history of the engine untill I get the block casting #

are they 062's or 906's? you just gotta count 8 intake manifold bolts to know their vortecs though.

I have an older version of this program somewhere and yes its really cool. Mine put my mustang right at 300 HP and just a smidgen more than 300 ft-lbs of torque for my power band (4000-5000 rpm)

No clue on the 062 or 906, but the centerbolt design and casting number was a giveaway.

Eh, idk, I mean, my buddy with his 1972 chevelle did a top end rebuild with the same trickflow heads, 268 crane cam, edelbrock performer rpm intake and edelbrock 650 performer carb that chevy hi performance did, and came within 3 horsepower of what they dyno'd their engine at. Also, it pretty much just nailed my car's numbers when it was stock (if it had the L98 engine) with a new cam I made that is really close to the 1990 stock L98 cam. So far it seems like its doing it's job, but you may be right, it could be flawed in some aspects.

062 and 906 are the last 3 numbers for the only two different casting #'s for L31 vortec heads, which came out in '96. All heads from 87-95 are also centerbolt on 350's, but their are L03's, L98's, L05's, and other engines, and most of them are swirl port heads, with the exception of the L98 head that came on TPI motors. TPI vortec baseplates have only been out for a year, you just got the car? So the chance of having L31 heads is kinda slim. Send me a copy of the program [I'm not dl'ing kazaa lol]

here's my motor from the other thread on the desktop dyno, using stock L31 head flow numbers and the exact cam specs. thanks for the software MoP

reads out 428hp/442lbs/tq - which is the about the limit for vortec heads, i'm probably at 400hp/420ft-lbs

Bah, I just take my car to the real dyno. I do want to put it on an engine dyno one day with everything back to stock to see what an '03 Cobra really puts out at the crank, then put all my additions on and run it. Everyone says they are closer stock to 390rwhp than to 390 crank hp, but all those engines were tested on a wheel dynojet or mustang dyno and then SAE corrected, which is never really accurate.

Hmm, I wonder if they make one of those programs for diesels. There is really no way to dyno the Cummins my grandfather built up without ripping it out of the Brockway, but I am really curious to see how much hp/tq it makes. I know it was roughly 350hp/1,000lb-ft before he turboed it and swapped a few things. Then again, I wouldn't know the specs on it without tearing it down and finding out exactly what's in it anyway. O well, I guess it will stay a mystery.

That would be cool Dooms. Diesels amaze me with the insane amount of torque they put out.
