a 250 ninja is prolly the best to start, if u want something bigger, than go with a used f4 or something. u might be able to get a used f4i for 4500.

Get an older GSX-R. Pre-2000 is carb injected and they aren't as beefy as the newer bikes.

yeah a 250 is good to start on. you can get one for ~2500 for a used 2005 model, cheaper for older ones obviously. put a few k on it and turn around and sell it for close to what you paid. they hold their value THAT well
and a yzf600 is one of the most well-rounded bikes out there, can be had for relatively cheap if you look around.

both...there is no such thing as "carb injected." either it's fuel injected or carbeureted. some bikes are now FI , but others are still carbed

I agree with you on this one. There's a nice one for sale locally-'05, 2300 miles, Yosh pipe, -1 Rear Sprocket, and he only wants 3k for it. Yea, its not an R6, but it'd be better if you have little experience.

if i went with a 250 the only one i would buy is an 06 ninja only because it most closely resembles a "real" sport bike. im not a big fan of the other styles they just dont look like something i would wanna ride. plus for 3 grand you cant beat a brand new bike. im also 6'0 230, so i dont know if a 250 would have enough juice for me. that was really the only reason i considered a 600

like I said, check out a Thundercat (yzf600r). also try a suzuki SV650 (sv650s if you're not a fan of naked [i.e. no fairings] bikes). the SV has a vtwin so it has more torque, which makes it a lil easier to pop it up at slow speeds, but it's generally looked upon as a decent starter bike. there's also a gs/es500, kinda in between the 250s and 600s. or even the new ninja 650 if you want to put that cash down and make payments. go to dealerships and sit on the bikes to see which one is most comfortable. those supersport 600s are pretty much race bikes, meaning you're more leaned over and therefore uncomfortable. my bike has much better ergonomics for longer riding (i've ridden from sacramento to fresno, a 150 mile ride, with no stops and was only a lil sore. if i was on a supersport my back and shoulders would be killing me), and is just generally better for a daily street ride. why buy a racebike for the street, when all you need is a streetbike?
basically, don't worry about getting a sexy sportbike for a first bike. chicks still dig 250s, and they dig guys who are talented enough to stay on their bikes and not hurt themselves because they wanted the latest greatest shiny sportbike
