wow,
thats actually not that amazing of a set up, using sensors to determine the distance of an object has been around for a real long time. And using that to tell a hyrolic ram how hard to push a pedal, aint too complicated at all
but still, no thanks, sensors go bad all the time. At my dads garage we see stuff like o2 sensors, cam position sensors, crank position sensors, throttle sensors, oil pressure sensors go bad ALL the time, very often actually, and when they do the engine runs terrible.
What happens when one of these sensors go bad? i dont want to be next to a new volvo on the road now

Another excuse to not watch what the hell you're doing and what's happening- Because Hey! My car will stop itself!
Lovely.
But would it stop for a suicidal ground hog or squirrel so you can cause a problem or hazard for other drivers, or maybe they wouldn't be large enough to set it off.

I honestly dont think this will "take off" and hopefully it wont come to the US. Seems like it would cause more harm than good.
I see 2 straight obvouse problems with it.
1: The driver gets too used to the feature and that one time he/she doesnt react on their own it will fail.
2: What about the car(s) behind? I see a big pile up resulting from this. Watch, a animal will run out infront of the volvo and automatically stop, and the volvo will get rear ended, Car A sues the Volvo, the volvo sues the company. Just a big mess.

Driver's won't be able to get used to the system because it only brakes at the last second before a collision is unavoidable.
And I doubt they'd forget to program around factors such as small things on the road.

They tried that with the 1956 Firebird II concept. The car was designed to drive itself along a wire imbedded in the road. Cars driving themselves is nothing new.

and this system is also not new. BMW has a similar feature in their 5 series i think. Where it will slow the car down, reducing speed.
The only positive i see from this is the car applying extra pressure if it's needed. Calculating that the driver isn't giving enough brakeing power and will collide anyway.

im guessing that that volvo has a drive-by-wire system? Itd almost have to, because an electronic braking system couldnt control a mech. acceleration system, itd have to bypass the acceleration system in order to kill throttle and apply the brakes.
