im very mad...need help with truck
ok so as some of u may remember i recently got a "new" S10. well first thing i did wen i got it was replace a bushing on the door, not too bad...those things happen. but now my windshield washer fluid is leaking from either the reservoir or the hose (i think its the reservoir). and i need a new ****ing alternator.
now tell me if u think i need a new alternator, thats just wat the guy at autozone said....
my battery light comes on after about 2 min. of driving. i checked my battery and starter and their both good. what dou think? and how much is the average cost of an alternator (for a small pickup) i got a friend thatll install it for free, ill prolly buy him a case or somethin for it...but i have to get an alternator first.
what do u guys think?

I'll bet about a hundred-something. That's what a stock replacement for the sebring would cost, I had to look once.
Did you have the alt. tested? second opinion from another shop?
That's great that the light comes on, damn things are really helpful.
I don't know, I had a horror story with Advance last winter so, you know...take their advice with some salt. Unless you know the guy talking to you knows his stuff.
My story is long so I'll spare you unless anyone wants to hear it. It lasted about four days and the highlights include great things like "You know that's the negative post, right?" as I watched him try to attach the red clip onto it.

I would have it tested at a shop, and ask them your questions- not autozone or something.

You can get a reconditioned one for a little less. My friend and I replaced his alternator on a 98 Cherokee which is similar to light or small truck.

Might be the alternator. If your electronics slowly start to stop working one by one...it's definitaly your alternator.
How much did you pay for your S10? Did you know the seller or did you get it from a dealer or used car lot? Did it come with any sort of warranty?

ok, alternator if working, should put out 14 volts, even 13 is OK but not great. A bunch of things can cause the symptoms of a bad alternator.
heres a couple...
1. bad battery cable (youd be surprised how many times this is the case)
2. bad ground
3. bad battery
4. bad alternator
5. bad voltage regulator (most likely on your car thats in the alternator
only way i know to test is with a battery tester, which tests everything
u just gotta find an honest shop, which is tough, best shot is to take it to like 5 different shops and get estimates at all of them

Not more than 10 bucks I would think... I'm sure it's easy. Can't be more than connecting some plastic hosing and a couple bolts... Easier than a door bushing I would imagine... It's not like your workin on the engine so you don't have to worry about messing it up. The worst that can happen is you can't wash your windows until you figure it out...

Might be the tank...take the tank off, look for a crack or something, and put some duct tape over that sona***** lol. Yes, I think its the alternator. My battery light came on the other day, then my ABS light came on. Then my headunit started cutting out. Then I got home, and she died lol.
Now my ****in power steering pump is going...thank god I am getting rid of it.

an alternator can be replaced in a whopping 15 minutes on a early-late 90's model gm. seriously, you DC the ground from batt, get a long ratchet, atleast 15" with a 5/8" socket, pull the tensioner back and remove belt. then there's two 10mm mounting bolts and one big 5/8" mounting bolt on the side. then the batt post on the back of the alternator is also a 10mm bolt, and you just unclip the plug in for the voltage regulator. installation is just the reverse, and do not tighten the piss out of the 3 mounting bolts, you'll warp/crack the case. autozone sucks btw, full service auto ftw, or atleast advance auto parts. haha wait, you have a 4cyl and not a 4.3 dont you?
