My brakes are making strange noises
Hey pbf, I was coming home today and slowed to a light and there was a loud metal on metal kind of grinding as i hit the brakes. Is this brake pads or what? And how much is this going to cost to fix? thanks

That seems like the sound the pads make when the pad is gone completly and either the metal backing or the caliper is rubbing straight against the rotor.

Most likely, your brake pads are more than worn down, and you probably have cheap metallic brake pads which have little bits of metal in them anyhow. It wouldnt be warped rotors because they make noise only when you are moving without applying brakes.
Find a Chilton's manual, or a Hayne's manual for your car, buy a set of ceramic or organic brake pads (the extra money is worth it over cheapass metallic pads) and do it yourself. Easy job that is pointless to pay a mechanic 75$ in labor alone to do.
Oh btw, what kind of car do you have? If it is older, then you might have drum brakes in the rear which take a lot to go bad, and it may just be your front calipers. If you have disc brakes all around, makes the job alot easier.

a warped rotor makes the car shake and vibrate under hard braking.
squeling noise = either mettalic pads or wear sensor
grinding noise = u effed up, lol, and the pads are gone. You most likely had cheap organic pads, they are the cheapest they make, they wear out fast. Mettalics are fairly hard and usually squeek throughout the lifetime of the pads.
if its only been grinding for a while, then a shop can cut them rotors down and re-use them, if you neglect it you'll get to spend about 100$ in rotors (depending on the car)
always use organic pads, its a win win, they are dirt cheap, and they dont make noise. Only problem is they make alot of dust

qft. I've never bothered to change the drum brakes on my car because they've never worn down and its just way too much of a hastle. but shoot the front brakes are really easy, i got them done in under an hour with simple verbal instructions. (i have a 95 saturn btw, and i'm positive the drum brakes have been changed before i bought it 4 years ago)

Well you figure, replacing pads isn't that bad, but if you wanna replace the shoes in the drum, the drums have to come apart...then again you could just get a new drum alltogether and pop it right on.

no, rear disc brakes are a ***** cause you cant just push the piston in the caliper back, because the e-brake is part of it, you have to turn ir alil and push, turn it alil and push, takes like 30 mins just to push the piston back.

I just got the pads at napa for $19. And incase any of you saw my thread about my heater core problem, my friends dad voluntered to install the new heater core and the brake pads. This was very nice of him and is going to save me alot of money since I dont know how to do these myself.
