Things to do. Car restoration help.
I'm making up the general list of stuff to do to get the old Lincoln running again after sitting for 22 years. I haven't given the car the full once over yet, but I know enough to get started. Do you guys think I missed anything? I feel like I'm missing some stuff, but I'm not sure. I probably won't end up doing all that's written, but it's better to start with a list of everything and go from there than just wing it.
1973 Lincoln Mark IV
Things to do (?):
1. Wash, Vacuum, Detail
2. New Battery
3. Change and gap spark plugs
4. Drop oil pan, transmission pan, and gas tank. Clean out gunk.
5. Change radiator and cooler
6. Change rubber hoses and gaskets (water lines, fuel lines, ect)
7. New water pump
8. New fuel pump and fuel filter
9. New power steering pump
10. New starter
11. New alternator
12. New distributor (cap) and rotor (points?).
13. New belts
14. New or rebuild carburetor (new aluminum intake manifold?)
15. New air filter
16. Compression and vacuum test engine, check timing (?), adjust valves (new aluminum heads, valves, rockers, ect?).
17. Change shocks, springs, bushings.
18. Clean and grease fittings
19. Rip out Emissions crap.
20. Find out if it has the posi option, rebuild rear and change rear end ratio.
21. Headers with remotely operated exhaust cutouts.
22. Change front bumper (dented)
23. See about upgrading brakes.
24. Fix antenna hole in trunk.
25. Prep and paint
26. New tires (and wheels?)
I'm thinking of just dropping in a new engine and trans (which would save a lot of restoration work) But, that can always be done later, right now my focus is more ripping the car apart, cleaning it, and getting it running reliably.

thats not all necessary imo
to just get it running strong again, you just need to..
*change oil (leave tranny fluid alone, you change it it will slip)
*change plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condensor (if its not a modern electric distr)
*new brakes, hoses
*new coolant hoses
*new belts
*check tires for cracks in the tread
*rebuild carb
Now, if you wanna do more then bring her back, and you wanna upgrade, then
*new springs if you wanna lower it a tad
*whats the engine? if its worth working, then alum intake and maybe heads
*like u said, find out if its got posi, if not, get one
*best upgrade, brakes, get nice big disc brakes, theres alot of kits out there

Here are some quick pictures I took on my camera phone today. They arn't that great because it's all the way in the back of the yard and I would have had to move everything to get to it.
Here is a slightly better picture of another 1973 Lincoln Mark IV so you get the idea:

It's definately a pimp car. I could do the whole pimp thing with it, but I think that's been done to death. I'd rather do a sleeper.
This is my vision in my head:
1. Pull up next to some punk kid in a Mustang revving his engine.
2. Smile
3. Electronically or cable open header caps
4. Rev the straight pipe 460 big block.
5. Scare the kid
6. Beat him off the line because of the traction a heavy car gets and the monster torque of the built motor.
7. Close the dumps and putter away like nothing happened.
8. Profit
I know, very childish of me. But I think it would be great to have a 12 second car that can fit me, 5 of my friends, and our luggage in the trunk; all while riding in comfort. That's the one thing I don't like about the Mustang, it's really a 2 person car, when I want to go for a nice long ride it's a PITA and when you get out you feel like you need to visit a Chiropractor. That's why I was thinking about getting one of those Trailblazer SS's to replace my Mazda Tribute daily driver, 400hp in a good sized SUV with AWD and basic off-road ability (so I don't get stuck when I need to do that 3am emergency run to the job site)....all while not being real flashy, but a car guy would know what it is. That way, I could drive it college and not get it messed with.
mspainter,
Yea, I do love my toys. I've been driving snowmobiles and construction equipment since I was eight years old, so I've always been into stuff I can drive. Unfortunately I always seem to find good deals and when I do I have to take them. My bank account hates me.
