Winter prepardness: READ THIS
Being as winter is slowly coming upon us and September is National Survival and Preparness month I thought it would be a good idea to go over what you should keep in your car in case of winter emergencies.
1. Warm Blanket(s)
2. Warm hat
3. Boots and an extra pair of socks (especially if you don't normally wear boots)
4. Instant hand warmers
5. extra Coolant
6. Sturdy Shovel
7. Kitty litter/salt/sand (for traction)
8. Ice scraper and brush combo
9. Small tool kit
10. Gloves (thick winter gloves)
11. food bars and water
12. flares
13. jumper cables
14. A good flashlight with extra batteries (an LED headlamp is excellent)
15. tow rope/strap/chains
16. First aid kit
17. Cell phone and car charger
18. Toilet paper (always good to have)
19. A whistle, bic lighter, sturdy multi-tool (leatherman wave/core/blast/supertool ect), emergency poncho, bandanna, thin gloves, compass, and pocket flashlight (with spare batteries), together, within reach of the driver. (the gloves and multitool should be easy to access in case you need to break glass to get out or cut the seatbelt)
Some things to remember:
1. Get your vehicle tuned up.
2. Change your oil to a thinner viscosity
3. Check (and change if necessary) your coolant
4. Change your wiper blades
5. Make sure your windshield washer tank is filled with winter deicing fluid (not just summer bug wash).
6. If you have winter tires don't forget to put them on, check your spare, check air pressure in all tires, check your jack and tire changing tools (make sure you know how to use them too).
7. Keep your gas tank level up, don't let it fall below 3/4 of a tank over night. Moisture can condense and freeze, plugging up your pump, lines ect.
8. Read your manual, a lot mention special things to do in the winter or add a list of car specific items you should have.
It sounds like a lot, but I have used all of the above at one time or another, not only to help myself, but to help others. So many people die completely avoidable deaths every year because they are unprepared and end up getting snowed in their car and freeze to death.
Good luck and stay safe out there!

Lol, it's like that in NJ too. Once it snows a little bit it's like everyone forgets how to drive. Meanwhile, in upstate NY, where they get a ton of snow, I've seen them have 6+ inches on the road and it doesn't bother them at all.

NOTE: when we are in the coldest part of winter, make sure you keep an eye on the water temp gauge. If it stays too low (130f) at full operating temperature, then your motor will sludge up and experience unnecessary wear.
A couple of times i when we drove to atlantic city (for the boardwalk hall races) the temp gauge would not even get off 100, so we put a piece of cardboard in front of half the radiator, worked great.
lol @ thinner lol, i forgot to do that lst year with my chevelle, that really is a huge problem when u try to start your car on a cold morning and u got 20-50 viscosity PLUS lucas oil treatment, haha that was funny

i swear, around here it takes people at least a month to realize that there's snow and ice on the road and that it's slippery. the exception is SUV drivers, they never slow down or take precaution, no matter the weather.
it's so amusing to come to school and hear everyone's story of getting stuck in the ditch or hitting mailboxes, etc. i think my favorite one was last year. there was this 15 year old **** talker who always bragged about how good he was at driving cars and how he had all this knowledge of them. well anyways, he was driving into town with a girl (her car) and trying to show off. he wanted to make her car fishtail around a corner, what he didn't realize that it was frontwheel drive, so he punched the gas to whip it around, lost all steering, and destroyed one of those huge plastic mailboxes everyone has. surprisingly the girl was ok with it.

And wet leaves in the fall. Every fall after a rain storm someone drives through the fence across the street because of slippery leaves on the ground during the really tight turn by my house that people fly through.

The best is the diesel guys who don't change their oil for the winter and wonder why the truck wont start, even when it's plugged in. Meanwhile, our old trucks and equipment start right up, even when they arn't plugged in. (Though they sound like quite the bucket'o bolts for 20 minutes or so)
By the way, I posted this exact thread over at PBNation and the only replies I'm getting are: "I live in CA, I don't need that crap" or "I live in Canada and all I do is carry my cell phone". I'm convinced 90% of the people who post in the auto forum are either really stupid or just post to fight.
