Someone got away
This rod came out of a Scotch Plains NJ police car. The car had a bit over 300,000 miles on the original engine before this happened. It was running fine until the cop went to chase someone and put the pedal to the floor. Then it just sputtered and died. When they tore it all apart this was the result. A rod both bent and twisted, until it finally broke. Amazing.

300,000 miles, but how many straight days of running is the real question. Cop cars never get shut off.

if the car averaged 18mpg, which im sure it did right around there somewhere, then 16,667 gallons of gas have been in the tank, the average gas price of the last 5 years has been like 2$ a gallon, so thats like $33,000 in gas. Enough to buy a ls2 gto

Plus their heavy foot take offs. No cop around here can take off without putting the pedal to the floor. Im sure that doesnt help with gas effieciency.

We took a limo to the Ringo Star concert in NYC not to long ago and I was talking to the driver about his lincoln. He said they put around 250,000 miles on each car before they sell them and some of them have gone up to well over 300,000 before they got rid of them. Apparently that Ford 4.6L SOHC in the Crown Vic/Lincoln Towncar is a pretty reliable setup. Then again it should be, the Engine is a truck engine (Explorer), the transmission is basically a four speed version of a three-speed Ford has had since 1950 so they have had plenty of time to perfect it, and the rear is a 31 spline 8.8" Ford solid rear, which again is right out of the old Explorer/Ranger. It's basically a car with truck parts.

You got the 4.0L in that jeep? That's why. Those engines last forever. I second the Astro van comment, they always look beat to hell, but they run forever. That 4.3L is a beast, makes sense though, it's just a chevy 350 with two cylinders lopped off.

i got the 2.5l which is basically the 4.0 with 2 clinders lopped off... same bore/stroke and everything i believe, only difference is compression and engine size...
EDIT: the 2.5 and 4.0 are pretty similar designs, and from anything i've seen are just as reliable as the 4.0, so that's probably why it's lasted so long... in addition to the cast iron block and head, it's pretty much a mini bomb shelter... lol
