Finding an old car to restore?
My dad has been saving his pontiac 400 smallblock ever since he had his GTO. It's built, I don't know with what but it dosen't really matter since it will need a minor-moderate rebuild.
He's also got the origional 4-speed transmission. He's been wanting to pick up a muscle car for ever to put this in, but just can't afford it.
I'll be getting a good amount of money in the next few months.. couple thousand up to 5kish. Planning on saving over half of it, but if I could find an old car cheap enough I'd buy it.
So what I'm asking is where do you find old cars? I know a GTO will be WAY too expensive. I'm thinking of a Lemans and just making it a GTO clone. I've already got 3 friends who have LeMans' but I don't really care. I would want the shell obviously.
Now my dad would be doing probably most the work. But I think it would be fun to do. Plus it'd be fun to take out on the weekends with. He is really good with cars too. He said in his old firebirds and trans ams, he could do a motor swap in like 43 minutes.
Basically I would want to spend about a grand for a decent shape one. That being said, not a lot of rust if any, some interior maybe all still there, etc.
Pretty much a LeMans, Firebird, hell maybe even a tempest would be fine.
Where to find them though besides ebay/craigslist?

Cruise around the countryside and look for cars just being used as lawn ornaments on people's property. Thats where I got the car in my sig. The rims alone are worth way more than the $100 cash I payed for it.

Are you serious? That's awesome. I'm in the northeastern corner of Kansas, so if I went west and southwest, theres tons of farming land.
What condition was it in when you got it?

Nows really the wrong time. The car market is classic car market is going nuts right now. Eventually it will calm back down, but right now everyone thinks they have gold and wants big bucks. If you are really set on an old car the best thing to do is find an old lady who is selling her son or husbands car and doesn't know what shes got. That's the only way you're really going to get a deal.

Yeah I hear ya. I found a pretty decent deal. A piece of **** 66 Tempest in horrible shape, and a nice condition 68 GTO. Both came with motors and other random stuff that weren't in the cars. I offered to buy the GTO from him but he refused to sell it seperatley.. It's still got most the glass, hardly any rust and its got all the suspension on wheels and tires too. He wanted $2400 for everything and I offered $800 on the goat.
Oh well. Maybe he'll eventually get desperate enough.

How about you gtfo?
Rick, got any pictures of when you first got it? Looks like it has come a long way man. $5000 is pretty cheap to restore that beast I'm sure it's worth atleast triple that right now.

no sadly when i first got the car digital cameras werent out yet, lol. The camera that took the first pic was like a .5 megapixel sony camera that used floppy disks for memory, and was like 700$, haha
When i got it, it was basically a frame, and a body, thats it. No guts. And i replaced the whole body, so really the only thing original is the damn frame.
hagerty insurance told me its worth $16,000

nah me and my dad built that entire car from the ground up. Every nut and bolt on the car, we tightened. Every ounce of paint, we sprayed. Every bit of body filler, we applied. Every weld, we..... welded. The only thing we didnt do was the pipes from the header to the mufflers, they had to be custom made because of the headers.
that car is worth more then 1,000,000$ in my eyes, i could never sell it

It was a flood car, that got rearended. So take the worst car you've ever seen and multiply that by 3. There was a waterline across the speedo when I first got it, thats how deep in the water it was.

Some guy was selling a fully-restored Maverick, can't remember what year.. I think it was like '73 or something. $1500. Almost picked it up but didn't have a steady source of income for it.

i now see what people mean by that when i ventured into my project.
get a 4th gen el camino. theyre big, stylish, and would be decently quick with a 400 SB. if you can find traction. they also arent very much. i picked my 5th gen up for 3200.
