E-brake?
Call this a dumb question, but are you supposed to engage the e-brake when parked?
(We got into an argument about it in class. I always thought you were supposed to, but now I'm not sure.

if you dont on your drivers test youll lose a point (here at least). not many people do though.. only manual drivers, obviously, or when youre parked on a hill or have a heavy load/trailer.
I never do since my ebrake doesnt even work.

In an automatic transmission car, you only really need to engage it if you are on a hill.
In a manual transmission car it is best to leave the shifter in neutral and engage the parking brake whenever you park, however if the car is on flat ground you can just leave it in gear and not engage the parking break.
Generally, the E-brake is for parking on hills or if something happens to your foot brake it can be used to stop the car. However, it takes an extremely long distance to stop it (since it only works the back brakes or center drive-shaft brake), so you have to down shift as much as possible (so you are only doing ~30 mph) then engage the brake slowly so it doesn't lock up the wheels. It isn't the greatest way to stop a car, but in some cars if you get a major leak in the brake fluid it becomes the only way to stop.

I learned that you're not supposed to do it all the time, as it will lose it's holding power and need to be tightened. I only do it when I'm parked on steep hills.
Edit - I typed this before Dooms posted: It doesn't really matter whether it's manual or auto, either way the car is parked in gear and the parking brake is simply extra.

That's true, but in cars with rear drum brakes just backing the car up and stepping on the brakes a few times will tighten them up. In cars with rear disk brakes the e-brake is usually self adjusting. In cars with a center driveshaft brake, turning the top of the e-brake tightens it up (you wont see this on a modern car). So, 90% of the time you don't need to worry about adjusting it. Generally you only have to worry about your rear brakes when it is time to change them anyway.

a lot of my friend's cars, mine included, dont have ebrakes that work anymore. Mine's ceased and then the pads are just gone. One guy i know, you pull his ebrake while he's driving and all the lights turn off.

I rarely use mine. I never use it in an automatic, and with a manual I only use it when parked on a steep hill or when I leave my truck running and get out. When parking my truck I nearly always just leave it in gear unless its on a hill with a load in the back, then I put the ebrake on.

Yeah, I always put it on; regardless of where I'm parked. This is ok, correct?

You don't need to, but you aren't hurting anything.

I always leave my car in gear now. I forgot to pull my e-brake one time at Wal*Mart and my Prelude rolled backwards into a minivan.

In newer automatics putting in park locks the gears, it's unnecessary IMO. I never use it in my Camry. I was taught to use it in driving school though.

I used to use mine all the time. Then I woke up one morning for school, forgot I had it on, and drove about half a block when I realized something was wrong. It's like, I was driving, it was restrained (like the e-brake should have been), and then I just kind of shot forward. Long story short, it doesn't work anymore, and the red light that indicates that it's ON is always lit, too.
