Jetta/Golf TDI?

Well once school gets out and I start working Full time, I plan on buying a new(to me at least) vehicle. Right now I drive my beat up old chevy 1500. My main reason for selling it is that it gets 15mpg on good day, and I plan on commuting to college, which is 45 minutes each way( dont know mileage, dont go up that way often), but I know that gas would murder me with the prices the way they are going now. My original plan was to get an A4, hopefully a 1.8T. However, I was looking at a Jetta TDI as my second choice. I would very much like to buy an A4, but with gas prices going the way they are I'm looking more towards the TDI. My price range is $8000 absolute limit. Preferably cheaper. I've also been looking at subaru's as well.

Audi A4
Pros:
Quicker
Nicer vehicle all around
AWD

Cons:
More Expensive
Worse Gas Mileage
More Expensive repairs

Jetta/Golf TDI
Pros:
40MPG=Win
FWD
Cheaper

Cons:
Slower
?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Right now I need something that wont be to bad on insurance must be good on gas, and must be either FWD or AWD, no exceptions. I'd also like something that isnt to to slow, this will be my second vehicle, and I'm 17. I just want something fast enough to be fun, but I dont it want it to be so fast that I'm gonna kill myself.

Don't think Diesel will be as cheap to repair as you hope.

Personally, up there I'd go for the A4. Since you are a kid, I'm assuming this won't be garaged, meaning you'll have to plug in the diesel to make sure it doesn't get to cold and so it'll start, otherwise it's a pain in the balls. It's better on gas, but if you are just concious about how you drive the A4 you can still do rediculous. Just stay under 65 and go slow on your take-offs and I guarantee you'll be above 30mpg on a nice day.

I'm not to worried on teh repair on the plug in part. My dad owns a Diesel F-350 that we plug in anyway, not to much of a pain. One of our tenants is a mechanic and does all the work(rather, tells me how to do it) on all of our vehicles(unless their under warranty of course).

The gas mileage thing was my main qualm with the A4, becuase on fueleconomy.gov is said it only gets upto around 25mpgs, which while not bad isnt amazing. But if it can break 30mpg, i'd be happy. I generally baby my vehicles in normal driving. Hell, I never even knew my truck had a shift light, I was just going by sound(no tach). And it was getting 15mpg on a good day. I'm scared to see what it'd get if I romped on it.

EDIT: Yes, A4's are sexy, why do you think i want one
