A hybrid finally worth getting
Well besides the FT-HS, this isn't a performer but with how much MPG it gets i'm willing to spill the money for it.
Next Prius to offer 94 mpg?
the new Toyota Prius is claimed to have 94 mpg (113 in UK standards) with gas prices so high, it may not be that bad of an idea. It's not much of a looker or a performer but hey with that MPG it's kinda worth it.

assuming it isnt to rediculously expensive, I would definately drive one. Hell, at 94mpg it would be easy to afford a weekend car that gets 5mpg :P

Not gonna lie. if they made a hybrid car with some decent styling and power I'd buy it. but they give them the ugliest ****ing bodies.

It will go down from 94 as getting it US certified requires adding quite a bit of weight in the form of safety devices.
Remember that mileage is only around town when it is running on battery power. After you go over 25mph or so it's going to drop. Also, you need to replace the batteries every 3-5 years. Personally I'd rather have a diesel jetta or something of that sort. You get about the same highway mileage, have more HP and twice the torque, there's no batteries to replace, and a diesel will last forever. Oh, and it costs less and looks nicer too.

Right now diesel is the way to go. If 10% of the population (instead of 3%) used diesel vehicles it would save around 1.4 million barrels of oil from our 19.6 million barrels a day. That's about 10% of our daily usage. It would also bring the price of gas and fuel down.

diesel is much more efficient then gasoline. But it is still a petroleum product.
Technology will be here soon to make alternative fueled cars cheaper and more practical... Just wait. You may have to change the batteries every 3-4 years, but battery technology changes way faster... Compare a 24v lithium battery of today with a 6v nickel cadmium battery of 1998...

Regular diesel yes, however there are biodiesels, diesel fuel made from trash, and various other fuel based technologies that are on the rise. The fact is the engine is already here and could easily be put into majority use. Which could then be used to supplement hybrid technology. Unfortunately it is largely untapped right now. I really think diesel is the first step and hybrids come next once battery technology and computerized engine management catch up.
Either way, right now the idea is to reduce our overall usage. In order to do that engines need to become more efficient every few years. With that in mind it makes a lot of sense to start with one of the most efficient and easiest to produce designs, then work from there.

No it wouldn't. Oil prices are set on the world market. If the US uses less oil and prices go down, someone else will buy more until the price goes back up to equilibrium.
In anycase... ****ing diesel?

you know it takes more energy to create a Toyota prius than it takes to build a Ford F-350 Pickup truck?

The article was about a Hummer, but it probably takes more energy than a F-350 as well.
I wouldn't mind a shift from gas to diesel, since at least diesel can make power, whereas all the stupid hybrids are wimpy & slow.

Yes it would. Being the United States is the largest consumer of oil by far (over 25% of the worlds supply) if we created a greater surplus it would reduce overall prices. Our usage is pretty much what sets the world market. Either way Europe or China wouldn't just start buying more because it's cheaper, generally companies buy what they estimate they will need. Oil is purchased months in advance based on seasonal usage.

Actually OPEC controls petroleum prices. I bet you if tomorrow we dropped nuclear bombs on Israel, OPEC would give us free oil for life.
