Radar Detector
Well, I just got done driving from Wisconsin to Florida over a two day period of time and I have to say.. Driving the speed limit sucks. I felt like such a dip**** getting passed by.. everybody. The only reason I did this was because I was driving "with" my mom (she drove a van, I had my car). She would chew me out if I would go even 5 over, while being blown past by other cars.
Anyway.. I'm going to be driving to St. Louis from here in about a month or so, by myself this time, and after this experience I don't plan on driving 1 or 2 over, just to stay out of trouble. I'm not saying I'll go 100+ the whole way, probably not any of the way, but I like to at least be moving with the 'group.'
What is everybody's experiences with driving 'cross-country' and speeding? Do you use radar detectors? I want to pick one up with some of my graduation money. I've always wanted one, but now with driving that far in a day, I'd really like one and think it would come in very handy.
But again, I'm just asking questions here. I really want opinions on this because if I'm going to drop cash on this thing I want it to be worth it.
I was just searching around on amazon and came across one that seemed to catch some good reviews.
Amazon.com: Beltronics Vector 940 Radar Laser Detector: Electronics
Thoughts? Opinions?
Danke.
PS. I never drank coffee but that stuff keeps you awake. So much I couldn't fall asleep last night.

IMO for interstate driving a CB radio would do you a lot more good than any radar detector. You can pick one up at walmart for like $39 and a decent antenna at a truck stop for about $15-$20. You set that sucker on ch. 19 (common channel) and you will know where all the county mounties and are way before you get to em.

CB is definetly a more useful tool.
ITs also way useful for avoiding traffic.

Yeah.. but I don't drive a truck. Nowhere to mount/one time use = messy car/not practical.

I was looking at CB's on amazon and they're pretty expensive. I'll have to check out prices locally.
Am I even going to be able to understand the 'lingo?'
I'm still thinking radar detector.

Cobra 19 Ultra III Citizen Band Radio - Wal-Mart
Cobra 19 Ultra III $34.99
Mobile CB Radio Antenna 18-244M
$16
just stick it on your roof and take it off when you get where your going. Walmart also carries this one too for about the same price.
another route is getting a hand held cb radio and you can get those for around $100

I say, stick to the radar detector. CB radio will probably be to much to handle.

they dont just "pick up" any cop..they have to have their radar on...itd be cool if they picked up just cop cars but they dont. i have one and i think their very useful, infact i only really use it on the highway cuz its just not worth speeding in my town (cops everywhere). i think their a good investment if u drive alot, or for a road trip, but dont cheap out..get a nice one.

i know they only pick up cops shooting radar. I was with a friend of mine and we passed a damn cop with his door open leaning on it with the radar gun, his didnt go off, yet we can pull up next to a walgreens and the thing goes crazy. Maybe he's got a cheap one.

Yeah, I've been reading up on detectors and they pick up radar, x, k, and ka which are used in speed cameras, radar guns, etc.. You still have to watch out for cops, which isn't a problem for interstate driving as most of the time you can see a good distance ahead.

Pretty much the best radar detector ever...
I'm getting one as soon as I get some money. I'm also getting a CB radio.

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest.
The Escort 8550 is pretty good too.
