New Intake on the Buick
So do these things actually help gas mileage and HP? I got this for $27 shipped on ebay and it definetly sounds cooler and looks sweet. I'm hoping it will help with mileage also but idk. Its not technically a cold air intake since its not in a spot with cold air, but with some pipe I could move it down to the front and make it one.

...Why?
That's stupid. You paid $27 for an AIR FILTER.

K&N ?
My K&N filter was like $39.99 I think. Those have a 1,000,000 mile guarantee.

But that's on a car that needs it.
Kinda worthless IMO. But hey whatever.

I had the same exact engine in my buick. I just modded the stock filter by taking off the air funnel thingy and opening up the hole in the filter box. I didn't feel like paying for an actual filter.

a carbon fiber hood on a prelude is kinda worthless but hey, whatever.
If he wants it, let em have it. If he didnt have the tools or convenience to make a setup himself then thats prolly why he just bought it off of ebay. $27 isnt terrible, but its not great either.
besides, on a tank ass buick, im sure you'd notice a good deal of improvement in acceleration with that setup.

Do you really want to get into that right now? I'm telling you aerodynamics and weight improved greatly. The Prelude was more of a "road course" car then a speed demon. All I ever did with that thing was drive on windy and twisty roads. Yes I had big plans and I eventually wanted a CF hood, just happened to come across one.
I'm only questioning him because he put a filter on his throttle body. That is STUPID and WORTHLESS. If he atleast had some piping, then maybe he'd actually benefit from it, even if it's a short ram.

All cars will benefit from better air flow.
All it needs not for some true gains is an exhaust

I do have some room and I could easily extend it farther from the engine if I just get some pipe. Would PVC pipe work ok or do I have to order the expensive metal pipe specifically for intakes? Probly stupid question idk im noob at this...

What's stupid about it? A stock 3300 has the filter box coupled directly to the throttle body. It's actually even closer than the filter he put on there. Why would piping help the air flow any better, other than take in air farther away from the engine?

I've seen PVC, dryer ducting, and all sorts of stuff.
This of course does not mean that its OK. Only that its possible.
Most of the intakes you can buy are made of aluminum or molded plastic.
Having the filter right there will suck in the hot air inside the engine bay. Short and less restrictive, but hotter air (less dense, less oxygen).
The stock setup probably drew the air in from the fender well or something. Cooler air, more dense, more restrictive intake(maybe?)

The stock setup had a plastic funnel tube about 2" in diameter at the end that ran towards the side of the radiator. I'm not sure if it actually drew air off of the fender or not.
And I understand the whole temperature thing, I just don't understand why it's worthless. To me "worthless" would be buying a $70 polished aluminum tube that would give that engine MAYBE a 1hp gain versus the filter mounted directly to the throttle body.

Your best bet is going to be GHL tubing. rub it down the drivers side and down a little bit.

It's worthless because it isn't his car.
It might let more or larger particles into the engine than the stock filters, because of the material or design. I remember some test on this somewhere measuring a K&N's flow and dirt stopping ability against that of a stock paper filter. The K&N flowed better but let more stuff through. I think that's the end result anyway.
If the stock setup didn't actually attach to the side of the engine bay (where there would now be a hole of some sort) it just drew in engine bay air.
If nothing else, remember it didn't cost a lot more than a stock filter, and you still have the stock parts if you need to put them back at some point. Right?
If you like it and it doesn't hurt anything, be happy with it.
