my amplifier no longer turns on.
I was listening to music a bit loud today and my subs just turned off. "no big deal I'll turn off my radio and turn it back on" I tell myself....no dice.
I've checked the fuses on the amp, and on the power line to the amp. The leads on the amp sparked then i tried to test the remote line by connecting the remote lead tot he power lead. All of this results in the power light not coming back on.
any ideas? would a bad grounding cause this?

as I recall though, the power light came on when i accidentally forgot to ground it. I guess I'll have to find a better ground though.

Find a new grounding point and that should fix your problem.

Mine randomly turned off once also. It was after bumping for an hour straight on a 100 degree day. I figured it was overheated so I turned it off for a while, turned it back on and it worked fine again. I guess my MTX amp has some sort of temp protection?

it's not overly hot, but yes, amplifiers have a het proctection on them.

all the fuses are good. I'm about to go out and re-ground it as soon as i figure out what I can ground it to that's easy access besides the metal floor of the trunk.

I dont really think it makes a **** bit of difference. Its an amp, mount it any way you want.
Yes, it almost positivly sounds like a bad or high resistance ground. Try scraping the paint off of the metal parts and mounting it.
Yes almost all decent amps have a 'Protection Mode' to prevent them from damaging themselves.

I thought the same thing but I read on a few different places that most amps overheat very quickly when mounted upside down. I personally don't see how it could

If mounting it upside down blocks the fan or somthing of the like that yeah I could see that. What brand of amp is it? Any decent brand (JL, Kicker, MTX and the like) I'd say would be alright. Worst case, it gets hot, turns into protect mode, and you say '****, that guy on the forum lied to me' and you re-mount it.
Not going to set any fires.

alright I'm stumped.
I took the ground off and the amplifier power light came on. I re-gounded it and the amplifer power light turned off. Either way there's no sound from my drivers. the power light will also turn off if it's un-grounded and i unplug the RCA-in wires.

I would recommend rechecking how you set the amp gains. Most places crank it all the way up, but it should be set close to how much voltage your head unit puts out. My new kenwood KDC-X492 has 4v, so I have mine set about 3v. My amp used to cut out simply because I set that amp gain like a volume gain.

what do you mean by "places"? I installed this myself.
Stupid question time:
I've been runnign this amp successfully for a few months with no problems. the gain was most of the way up though.
how do i check the gain output?

Seems like I talked you through setting the gain/level when you installed the amp, so that should be fine. I have also never had a problem with an amplifier turning off due to that problem.
Its time to do some testing that will be a PITA, unless it is working now. Take your amp out of the trunk and go to where your battery is. Take 2 pieces of wire run 1 + to + 1 - to - and jump the remote hook up.
Now get a sound source for it that you know works (ipod, portable cd player, etc) and hook that to the amplifer. The easiest way to hook your sound source up would be a 1/8" headphone jack to RCA cable. Get a small speaker that you know works and hook that to the speaker terminals. Play some sound from your source and see what happens.
Now if it checks out after all that recheck all your grounds/power/fuse/connections and then re check them.

It's a nice day i'm gonan do this.
so i connect the remote to the power and the power to my battery, right? of couse i also ground it.
I did this when i first got it so it whouldnt' be a huge problem. hopefully it all work out. If not i'm winning on a 300w alpine amp from ebay that claims ot be in very good and working condition.
edit:
same problem. the amplifier won't even turn on maybe it's time to open it up and see if something is indeed fried
