When you get kicked out of the house you can sleep on top of the motorcycle :P
If your parents continue to say no to a bike then I would do the same thing 1337 did, but I doubt they would allow you to be on their insurance policy if you buy it without their permission.
I'm on my own policy, it's not that bad. $42 a month for comprehensive.
Just tell them that you'll be 18 soon and you're going to do it anyways. As far as convincing them, tell them you'll take the MSF course and anything else. I would definitely recommend it because it sounds like you don't have any experience.
Yeah man I have never even sat on a bike before and none of my friends have them. I would definitely take the courses, as many as I could so I have a better chance of not killing myself. I do understand the risks involved with riding, and that it isn't always up to me if I live or die on the road.
Lets put it this way. Its just not my thing yet, and they arn't very appealing to the eye. I'll be honest, I care when people think what I ride looks good or bad. Just as right now I'm not really into cruisers, but as I get older I think I'll get tired of my nuts slapping against the tank.
I put my bike on Craigslist for $5800. (LOL) if it actually sells, I'm saving up for a K6 750 just like that. Should be able to pick one up for $6-6.5k in the winter months.
Very clean. Love the mirrors.

You really have no arguement, because riding is motorcycle is very dangerous. Your best chance is to go for the I will wear all my gear, take as much training as possible....it gets good gas mileage...its safer than a moped because you can be seen easier and you can power out of situations.

They will probably get over it but I think thats a bad idea.

Its all about how much risk you are willing to take and how much your riding skill can make up for. If you ride with a level head, be aware, have an escape plan, and wear your gear AT ALL TIMES your chances of survival are increased tremendously. I think its something like 40% of all MC fatalities could have been prevented with a properly fitting and certified helmet. If you wear you're helmet 100% of the time thats a good stat. for you.
Good luck.
PS My dad was all for me getting a bike....my mom didn't want me to get one and didn't know about till a rode it home. She was ****ing pissed and slept horribly for about a week. The guilt trips are pretty tough for a while so beware.

Most people don't. But I'm young and love sportsbikes too, infact I dislike all modern cruisers. Something just gets to me about those late 70's to mid 80's bikes. Love em.

I understand the fully covered deal. I am fully covered with my Jeep and plan to continue that over to my bike. Thanks on the gear tips, I will definitely invest in some nice gear, maybe even some pink for the gf. I plan on trying to talk to my dad about it tomorrow on our fishing trip. My mom had a brother (my uncle) that died on a bike when I was young and my dad is trying to protect her. Once I get through him, I have to get through her. I am not in a great position right now. But then again, I plan on leaving to college in August next year, and I would get the bike in April or May, so that might help a little knowing that I won't be in there house for that long.

I'd say budget at least $1k for full, good quality gear that will last a long time and save your skin. much cheaper than skin grafts

Damn I had no idea gear ran that high. I knew you dish out the skrilla for the helmet, but I guess it makes sense that gear is expensive.
I paid $200 for my helmet, $200 for my jacket. Bought both used. I'm a little squidly though and just wear jeans and shoes. I need to get some new gloves, I don't like the ones I have.

Full gear isn't going to cost 1k. Full racing gear on the other hand might approach that and exceed that depending on your taste, and wallet.
Another tip. Always buy helmets BRAND NEW unless you trust your head with the previous owners word. Also don't think you have to spend $200+ for a helmet that will save your nogin.
I'm buying some boots soon. Hopefully for B-day. 1 PC Suit in the spring. I know where to get a fully customized suit for $425 if anybody wants the link.

Can you or anyone else on the forums suggest some good brands for a helmet and where to buy them? I need one for the bike I'm learning on. I really don't want to spend more than $200. I want to get a Ninja 650r in the spring after I've learned a bit on the bike I have now. I will also need to get some boots, but I want to be able to wear them to work/class without looking ridiculous. I will also need a jacket/gloves. All of it for casual riding.

I think its a nice looking bike but I can't take in a bike for winter. If it was may or april I would be all over this guy. I want to get another car for my cherokee, as much as I love it. I want something fast and that I can turn over and still make some money.
What do you guys think of Buell bikes? I was thinking of grabbing a used Blast as my first bike.
I don't like them. Haven't heard much about the Blast, but reliability has always been talked about as an issue with Buells. I think you'd be happier with a 600 of some type.
Rode with a guy who has the Buell 12R or whatever. Regrets buying it and he said he's trading it in for an R1 soon. Some people really like them though. Another local rider totaled his ZX6R and bought a Buell, but is thinking about trading it in for an 08' CBR 1000RR. Just seems like a trend, anyone who gets the Buell, gets bored or tired after a few months and looks into getting a liter bike.
Thing is I don't want a sports bike. I want something with a more upright position.
Have you looked at the Ninja 650r? I have yet to sit on one but everyone who owns one praises the riding position. I'm seriously thinking about getting one in the spring.

I guess I'd have to sit on one to really know. There's a motorcycle mall not too far from here that I plan on visiting soon.

I don't think you'll be very comfortable on a Buell then.
I agree with ViP Viper, look into a Ninja 650R. Hell I bet HuntS will be selling his soon. Also my 636, you'd be surprised how comfortable it is for a sport bike. I've ridden them all, GSX-R, R6, CBR.. and I felt the Ninja was the more comfortable one. Then again, all 03-04 bikes you sit more upright and IMO is much more comfortable. All the 06+ ones it feels like you're laying down more.
Also another bike you could look into is a Yamaha YZF600R. Not a lot of power and a bit more comfortable. Overall, good starter bike.

Go to a dealer try on some helmets, find your size and the compare to online. Don't just go buying one online without trying it on first. They will all protect your head for the most part whether you spend $80 or $800. Its all preference, fit being THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING, beyond certifications. I love my HJC AC-11 which can be had for ~$110. (Or the AC-12 is the newer model) There is also a new HJC helmet with a built in sunshade that I've heard great things about. I think its the FS-12. HJC is probably one of the most highly regarded brands of all the helemts due their good quality and inexpensive cost. Do some reading on Snell and DOT certs. to guide your preference.
There are some boots made here and there that are meant to look like shoes. Check newenough.com first.

Lowend buells are plenty upright.
A pic from me to you:

Low-end Buells? You mean the Blast? That's the only "low-end" bike Buell makes ($4700 msrp). The other bikes are the XB's (there's quite a few of em) and the brand new 1125r (and 1125cr). The only bikes cheaper than my Firebolt ($10k) are the Blast and XB9SX ($8900). And my bike is not upright at all. If you're looking for an upright ride, check out the Ulysses or the Lightnings. They're both more upright than the Firebolt. The 'bolt is a sportbike for sure. The Ulysses is more of a standard/supermoto than a sportbike.
As far as helmets, Scorpion makes very good helmets for the price. I've owned two EXO-700's, and I'll likely pick up another one when I'm riding again. I've had the same pair of Icon Motorhead boots since I started riding bout 4 years ago, they cost bout $120 and are very very sturdy. I've gone down in them twice and the only damage they sustained was some road rash on the buckles of one of them. Oh and a small flap on the outside started to come off, I just glued it down and it's staying put. Icon may make low quality jackets (some say), but these boots are awesome.
