the SS are slow. The only ones worth a **** are the SS turbo
Uhmmmm no. There's a local guy who has a fast ass SS/SC and has been featured in several magazines. But stock for stock, yes the SS is pretty slow. They are some nice upgrades out there that can put them in the 13's or 12's fairly easily and without having to spend a whole lot of money.
If you're talking about the SS/TC, I've heard some pretty good things so far. People say that stock, they are fairly quick. I believe they come out of the box with 260hp at the crank. 210-220whp for a stock turbo four banger isn't bad. I'm just not sure how much more you can pump through that motor. It definitely isn't like a 4G63 or B-Series Honda motor.
I wouldn't ever buy the SS/SC based on the sole fact that I HATE superchargers with a passion. The only supercharged car I would drive is an 03' Cobra. Even then, I'd want to throw a T67 or something on it. Turbo is just so much better. Supercharged four cylinder is just flat out retarded. I was very disappointed with Toyota when they offered a supercharger package with their Scion TCs.
However for the money, you can get something so much nicer, better and faster. Why aren't you looking into WRXs or even older used STIs/EVOs? Mazda Speed3s are nice my buddy has one and it's supposed to be one of the quicker ones in the country. He was one of the first people to get a front mount installed on the 2008 Speed3s rather then having the lame ass top mount on.
Besides, I thought you were going to build up your Jetta or something?
the cobalt ss/sc is not that slow of a car. it is a great car that you can mod up the ass to make it really fast. my friend in my car club has one and he smokes the ls1 camaros and gtos. now for the turbo cobalt that car is bad ass!!!!! just with a tune your over 300 hp to the crank.
SC colbalts are dogs. I can keep up with a "stage 2" which is a tune, smaller pulley, intake and exhaust and put a car on them depending on the driver. I only have a Chip. And I'm probably right around 210whp... They aren't very impressive.

I used to smoke SCs like crazy in my old 5.0 Mustang and DSM. Stang only ran a 14.6, DSM at it's peak PROBABLY would have been in the 13's.

Yeah my is doing fairly well and getting 32mpg. I'm keeping up with lt1's, 302's, and did fairly decent against a 300zxTT tonight. Nothing to complain about.

im not saying the cobalt is a really fast car but to most imports it will smoke them. stock to stock. my friends sc cobalt hits 13.1 and my other firend in my club with his turbo balt moded hits 12.5 now you want to talk about power another guy in my club has a 9 sec grand national. he cant even keep his front tires on the ground.
its a cobalt-yea its got a good engine setup and potential, but they still look like crap, fit and finish is a joke, and interior is cheap. Typical gm product

basically what everyone else said... decent car, but for the money you'd spend on one, look elsewhere.. much better vehicles out there for a similar price, and much mmore performance.
If he looks at used, then no not really. However new, the STI/EVO would be quite a bit more. I think the new WRXs MSRP for like 26ish. But man you can pick up a cherry 04-06 EVO/STI for 15k pretty easily.

the problem with used evo or sti is that young kids beat the **** out of those cars. and when they about to hit 100k the motor starts to go out. my friend has a evo 9 a very nice car. he is 550 hp to the crank. to mod those cars you better have **** load of money. he dumped over 20 gs into his car. if you like the cobalt then get it. dont listen to us what to get or not to get. we are not paying for the car u are. i bet these ppl that are talking **** about the cobalt never drove one or been around them for a long time. well i have and ive seen what they can look like and how they can out performe alot of cars. get the turbo one though if you want a cobalt. just with a tune, intake, and exhaust you will be just as fast as the evo or sti or even faster. the mazda 3 is a nice car to but depends what u want.
If you get a Cobalt, or any other car like it, save your time and money and don't expect it to be fast. It is what it is, and what it is is a 4 cylinder gas efficient daily driver.
That said, I'm not a fan of them. My mom really wanted me to get one and I didn't.
Look into the Mazda 3 for sure. Also the newer Corollas look kinda cool and are still super gas efficient.

Sure, it can be "Just as fast" but this is solely in numbers. How are you going to put we'll say. 475whp to the ground (thats being nice and measuring in crank is hella dumb, take about 20-30% of that power away once it goes through AWD) Yes I drive a front wheel drive car, and yes i have tons of problems hooking up and i'm just barely over 200 to the wheels with 225's up front.
The problem is, you could spend all that money on the Cobalt, which for everything you've mentioned would be around 2-3 grand. OR he could get a nice older body STI throw on Exhaust, Cobb tuning, and have a Pretty nice car all around, handles well, drives nicely (not to me personally) and is a blast to get into (this I do agree with) I'm not a fan of subarus but I will give credit where credit is due. for 15-17k a used STI with low mileage, no mods, and an older previous owner is where it's at.
Most of us know ALOT more about cars than you think there brotha man.

DONT GET ME WRONG STI AND EVO ARE NICE CARS. LIKE I SAID YOU JUST HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHO U BUY IT FROM. IT ALL DEPENDS WHAT HE WANTS. A DAILY DRIVER LIKE A MAZDA 3 OR A PERFORMANCE CAR LIKE A STI, TURBO COBALT, MAZDASPEED 3, CALIBUR SRT-4, ECT.... tippmannfronter HOW OLD ARE U??

WHAT COBALT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? THE BASE MODEL ONE? IN THAT CASE THEN YES THE MAZDA 3 WOULD BE A BETTER CHOICE. BUT FOR 20 GS FOR THE NEW COBALT SS TURBO IS THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK.
