Sport Compacts/"Ricers"
Just wanted to say something:
I don't think anyone here that is big into American muscle would really hate the sport compacts just because they are imports or some stupid reason like that. However I think the big reason they are not liked by many is that for every nicely setup one there are 5,000 that the guy slapped on a chrome muffler tip, "NOS", and stickers and thinks he is fast and acts like a jerk always wanting to race. It is one of those things where I think the many ruined it for the few, if you understand what I mean. When I see a nicely done sport compact it gets a lot of respect from me, a while back a saw a Honda hatchback with something like a twin turbo V-tech making atleast 500hp. It was done tastefully as a sleeper, you could tell the guy put a lot of hard work and love into it, on the outside it looked pretty normal, but pop the hood and the engine was all nice polished stainless, real well done. My uncle had an RX-7 that was a simply amazing car.....I myself even drive a Mazda on most days. I know if they all were like that honda or close to it there would be no doubt in my mind that they would be the new muscle. But, when I go to the local car show and look at some of these cars I can't comprehend the thought process that went into it. I mean, no one needs 7 tvs, a stereo that takes up the whole trunk and a body kit on a car that is already lowered. There are also very few vehicles I know of that need a twin 5" exaust, short of a tractor trailer.
I don't know, maybe it is just all the plastic or that i'm big into the K.I.S.S. principle that causes them to bothers me, but on a quite lot of these cars I don't see good taste, it's like they don't know when enough is enough. I mean, I would laugh if the same things were put on any car, be it old American muscle, Import muscle, or Ferrari. One year I think I will go to the SEMA show, just to try to get a better understanding of things. Until then i'll stick to cars I think are nicely and tastefully done.
Just wanted to say that, as I thought it would create a better understanding in this enviroment. Basically I just wanted to give my thoughts, which i'm sure is close to the thoughts of many of the old muscle fans here.

I actually considered getting a Mitsubishi 3000 like my cousin's before I got Skull-1. But, I stuck with Pontiacs just like my pops did since the mid 60s.
I like performance imports like 3000s, Supras, RX7s, etc etc, are brought to a new level.
Modding econoboxes... I cannot see the point of polishing a turd. I just can't. I never will. There's always always better platforms to do it.

I am with you 100%. I actually lean more toward imports, but I have alot of respect for American muscle, too. I see way to many people just like you say. The ones that are all show and no go. I hate all those super extravagant body kits, too. Some body kits look nice, and some just look like crap. Myself, looking good is one of the last things on my list. I would rather be fast than look good, but both can be done.
To me, nothing is cooler than taking an average family car and making it fast.

This is true. We took a buddy of mine's camaro to the track just to see what he could do and he got lined up with a four-door civic. From what we saw, all it had was an exhaust. Well, he murdered my buddies camaro, he showed us the engine later; he had a Turbo'ed B20/Vtec engine in there. Had a lot done to it, very good sleeper, I might add. But yes, a lot of kids put exhaust and think there car is "fast" and add the rims and bodykit+oversized spoiler, and basically the speed factor is gone in that car. But, when any sport compact that is done right doesn't bother me. 90% of the civics out there are rice, yet watch out for the 10% that are done right.

i hate econoboxes all together, i have no problem whatsoever if you have an import, but when it comes to making it rice (nothing but visual ****) especially civics, because that's all every dumbass kid aorund here has, and theyre all rice i hate it, it pisses me off... i have no problem if you have the money to buy say a 3000gt, or an eclipse, or whatever, and if you have the money to make it a hella good sleeper car, and slack on the visual upgrades, then i can have some respect for ya... most ppl that actually race their cars and know what they're doin have sleepers, they look completely stock, unless ya look under the hood... what i cant stand is if ya buy a $9000 car, with a 4 banger, and act ike ur all cool cuz you saved ur extra 10,000$ that you could have used to get a MUCH better car, and then ya invest it into the 4 banger and body kits and ****...

I agree on this. Frigging kids got no sense. I bought a 4 banger 2nd gen Mx6 a while back. Love the car, and the style still looks great, not boxy. Anyway. I have a engine waiting to be overhauled, overbore, forge, turbo, tune. Someone with a similar setup is putting 450whp/400lb. My car will look exactly the same it does now, for the exception of a slightly larger front bumper. (to make room for the intercooler)

i know exactly what you guys mean. For autoshop at school we had to do a paper on our dream car(i chose eleanor). when we presented them a spanish kid comes up with a report for his dream car on a honda civic. I wanted to beat the **** outa him. it wasnt even a hatch back and it didnt have the vtec. just a regular civic. Even my autoshop teacher lafed at him. The my teacher gave us a big lecture on how those exauhst tips(soup cans) that these itiots are putting on thyer rices kills your torque(wutever torque they had to begin with.
I dont hate imprts tho. I love the STI. The supra is cool and there are alot of other respectable imorts out there.

you know its funny the only thing i can see here is complaining about RICERS....if you knew the true meaning of the word.
nobody in here has a clue it seems of the Sport compacts.
Yeah they may not be the style you like, or have obscene amounts of Hp and tq but look at the weight they have to move. The only thing i read here is how much you all hate the ricers and dont give due credit to the major people who build the compacts to perform.
V8 performance has been around for so long its so easy to bolt on performance and get big gains....why is that. They have been around long enough to advance from previous designs.
Sport Compacts have only been around for MAYBE a decade, they have come a long way since then, still nothing huge but they have to advance just like the V8s did....give it another 5-10 years and V8s at the track will be a thing of the past....kind of.
Another thing.. Why are so many Vehicle Manufacturers funding or even building a 4 cyclinder drag car or street car if they are so slow and gutless

Drag car motors are rebuilt after each race, it is a lot cheaper and more cost effective to rebuild an I-4 after every race, then it is to rebuld a V-8. However, if I remember from the discovery channel the guy that started with 4cyl drag cars is still only pulling funny car numbers and he has had a lot of problems with blown engines when trying to create the same HP as the Top Fuel V-8's. It would be nice to see a 4cyl top fuel class though, it would allow people without as much money to get involved in drag racing, as it should be quite a bit cheaper.

My guess is to bait young idiots into thinking they can bolt on fast and furious performance to their mom's Accord. I wish I had invested in companies like Iceman, Mugen, Apex, etc before they started making money off of fools.
