"Learning how to drive stick"
Well, I know how to drive stick from always ridin dirt bikes and quads and my friend's cars, but tonight my dad wanted to 'teach' me how to drive stick because he didn't believe me. Stupid truck, the gas pedal was hard for the first 1/4 inch, then got soft so it kept revvin to high on me. I was gettin pissed off. I got it down though, just had to get the hang of the truck.
Anyways, share some of your stories of when you started ot learn how to drive stick.

I think my partner in Drivers ed laid about 60 yards of rubber when we were learning stick.. You could hear it all the way back to senior commons.. The drivers ed teacher only looked over and said " I said give it a LITTLE gas."

The trick with pedals like that is to flutter your pressure on it, straight pushing will cause you to stall out pretty often until you get the hang of it, if you flutter the pedal you have more control.
Anyway, after I learned how to drive stick and thought I got pretty good at it my father one day took me up to the yard. He pulled one of the Brockway's out of the garage and said "Your pretty good now, but I know how to get you perfect." Well, for those of you who don't know what a Brockway is it was basically the bigger better brother to Mack trucks back in the 30's- early 70's. Back in the 60's in order to get the 18 or 20 gears those trucks needed they used duel back to back transmissions. That means, instead of having one shift lever, you have two seperate levers you have to work sometimes at the same time. Now with a 30 ton load, air brakes, and a jake break that can get pretty hairy sometimes. Well, after an hour or so I kinda got the hang of that, but i'm still no where near my father or my uncles who have been driving those trucks since their father bought them new in 64' and 69'. If you can drive a "5-and-a-4" like that tractor, anything after that is no problem.
The Brock I perfected my skills on:

I learned in my 4runner. First few times I totally ****ed up, but I finally got it. It also really helped that I drove my grandpa's truck around town while I was in cali.

I learned on my dads s2000. First time I started on a hill, so I dropped the clutch and stalled it horribly. He realized it was retarded to start on a hill and i just went around the block in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Today he let me drive again, I went up to 5th gear without trouble, and didn't stall once. This car kicks ass.

I learned in my dad's Ford Ranger. Now I drive my 300ZX which is obviously manual. Once you learn you'll prolly never go back to automatic. Stick is so much better & more fun.

My dad first started me out with stickshift on his old 68 English MGB. My god, that was a pain in the arse, esspecially slipping the clutch when facing up a hill in the thing. After becoming semi-skilled in that, everything else stick shift was just cake.

I first tried it on an old K5 Blazer before I had my permit, and I didn't get to try it out much. I then taught myself on a few of my friends cars, and eventually got it down good on my Uncle's '69 Chevelle SS396. That was a little tough for a few reasons.

I can drive tractor, and I've driven one with that type of gearbox, it had like "A-D", and "1-5". Not too tough since you don't do much shifting in tractors, and you don't have to use the clutch to shift.

IMO the easiest way to learn clutch is on a nice, close ratio sports car. It makes you want one. Even tho I've gone from 2nd the 1st since 1st and 3rd and right next to each other. I have driven clutch on a pos s10 and that was no fun at all.

Did that a few times when I got the Cobra, I kept going from 2nd to 5th or from 3rd to 6th because it was so close and I was used to driving 4 or 5 speed trucks where it was so far apart. After a week or so I no longer had that problem though. It just took some getting used to.
