i would say either a honda crf100 or crf150 but the crf100 would be the best for your experience level.

how old and how rich are you?
I'm poor so I bought a 1998 cr250 cr = 2 stroke
and a bike is a bike is a bike, 2 stroke 4 stroke, they're all pretty much the same. The only thing that will limit you for a while will be your skill, but you'll get better.
Personally, if you're poor, buy a late 90's 2 stroke 250 and if you're rich, buy either the cr450f, yz450f or the wr450f if you want to ride trails in the night time.

WTF
Dude a 125 and a 250 are the same size pretty much. Just the 250's got a bigger motor.
I rode my friend's Yamaha YZ-125 and its pretty nice. He's also buying a XR-50 to mess around on.

a bike is a bike. The only hassle with 2 strokes is mixing fuel and thats not even that bad.
And there isn't much difference between any of the manufacturers really imo

Honda is most reliable.
Yamaha has better turning.
Suzuki has better suspension.

Get a 4 stroke. You'd be happier with one, especially with your experience.

I know
but in all honesty, I would narrow this guys search to a used bike. Buying a new bike is nice, but they lose their values so fast....
and I think the best bikes for him would be a...
250 2 stroke
450 4 stoke (whats the honda equivielent to the wr? the xr?)
