It's said that barrel adaptors are bad for accuracy and can increase barrel breakage.

I have no personal experiance with barrel adaptors, so I can't say for sure.

iv always been under the impression that they would but have never been able to try one with a barrel and then the same barrel on the same marker without the adaptor

Correct.

Depending on the barrel, its better to just get a other one in the proper threads. I would say 50 bucks or under, get a new barrel, used is always an option. It will increase barrel breaks. And expecially with high end barrels, it ruins the bore match.
